hl2.exe issue

Since there's no point in saying "I have a problem halp" without posting information, here is informational stuff.

Dell XPS L502X
Intel Core i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz
8.00 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

Occasionally when playing games that run the hl2.exe * 32 process, it freezes (including audio), and doesn't unfreeze within a few seconds. I then go out of the program, to task manager, and end the hl2.exe * 32 process. The game closes, that's fine. The process still appears in task manager, and Steam still claims that I have it open. I also attempted to end the entire process tree, and that also failed. I have then ended Steam.exe, closing GameOverlayUI.exe, because it won't let me close out of Steam if the game is "running". I then went to task manager and ran this command:

taskkill /F /IM hl2.exe* /T

The response was that the process could not be terminated because it didn't exist. So, right now I'm trying to figure out why Task Manager and Steam were both registering hl2.exe as a process that existed when it didn't exist, or why task manager couldn't find hl2.exe, even though I used the process image name and the PID.

Yes, they are all verified and valid. I should also note that this has happened multiple times and with multiple games. This is with Garry's Mod, the actual Half-Life 2 game, and with the Hidden mod of Half-Life 2.

well i have the same problem too you know..have you ever switch off the pc and turn it back on?it works on me..

I'd rather have an option that doesn't force me to restart my computer.

I have the same issue. Can't play any other Steam games while hl2.exe is running, can't close Steam, can't end the hl2 process, so forced to restart. Forced restarts like this are totally unacceptable.
