the developer or publisher of that game was nice enough to convert you retail key to a steam key.
I can not garantee they still do that.
playing that game multiplayer with steam and none steam players I don't know.
loved the game but I would never play online myself.

if you buy warband of steam the key will work on the stand alone demo making it the full game.
maybe he asked why I am not playing it online.
because I bought it for single player. :)
