Empire total war help

i have a problem with empire total war. Whenever i try to exit to the main menu from anything, the picture freezes, i can hear the main menu music but the picture is still frozen on whatever was up. please don't say that i might not be able to run it as i am perfectly capable to as i have before on a mac of the stats.

Computer stats
Intel i7 processor
intel hd 3000 integrated graphics
4gb ram
windows 7

What i was meaning by that was, how would i fix it so i'd never encouter that issue again?
