Offline SCAM "failed to contact key server"
Steam Offline is a scam and a joke.

I recently lost internet for a few days and over 50% of the games I have installed would not play in offline mode. "failed to contact key server"

All I wanted to do was play Mount and Blade Warband and I could not do it. "failed to contact key server" Skyrim, La Noire and some other games would play in offline mode but the games I wanted to play wouldn't. I couldn't play Farcry 3, Assassins Creed 3, Warband and many others.

Obviously I don't own my own games and Steam Offline mode is a scam and a joke. Seriously thinking about opening a ticket and asking for refunds for all my games that do not work in offline mode. I own over 200 games and I bet the majority will give me "failed to contact key server".

Some games will not play in offline mode, that's up to the devs/pubs, not Valve.

Also, you must start any game while online that you wish to play while offline.

To set offline mode up properly:

Offline Mode works fine for me. Are you sure you followed all the instructions for using Offline Mode?

I don't think you understand. I had no internet which means I could not of possible done this:

Please follow the instructions below to configure Offline Mode on your PC:
Start Steam online - make sure the Remember my password box on the login window is checked
Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under the Library section (when the game shows as 100% - Ready it is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
Go to Steam > Settings to ensure the Don't save account credentials on this computer option is not selected
From the main Steam window, go to the Steam menu and select Go Offline
Click Restart in Offline Mode to restart Steam in Offline Mode

Seriously what is the point of being online, then going offline to play a game meanwhile you have interent connection in the background?

If you wake up one morning and don't have internet you are screwed because obviously you cannot to the steps mentioned above. Gee I guess we are all suppose to know exactly when our internet is going to go out, set up offline mode and then never shut our computer down for the remainder of our internet outage. Like I said it's a joke.

Far Cry 3 works perfectly in Offline mode.

Also you don't NEED to do that to go into offline mode, just trying to load Steam will start the "No connection detected. Do you wish to start in offline mode" and it will put you into offline mode!

Tell me, did you disable your network adapter when you didn't have internet? If Steam sees a network, it's going to want to go online, when it can't it screws with offline mode.

If you temporarily disable the adapter, you should be able to go right to offline mode. Of course, it has been quite a while since I needed offline mode and I haven't verified this lately but i don't see why it would have changed.

I was in offline mode. I did not disable any network adapters but it's irrelevant as steam said "we detect no connection would you like to go into offline mode yada yada" so yes I was in offline mode and games would not workie!!!
If I buy songs from itunes or amazon I don't need internet or an offline mode to listen to the songs.

if i buy movies on my ps3 i dont need internet or offline mode to watch the movies.

face the facts gents we dont own these games

Then you haven't got something quite right. as many other can attest, offline mode does work.

I only have one of the games you are having this issue with but I'll test right now. bbiab.

This is irrelevant to the topic. Please refrain from this type of posting.

Stay in online mode.
Turn your computer off.
Unplug your ethernet cable.
Turn your pc back on.
Go into offline mode.
Now try the games.

You're right, you don't own the games. You are merely renting the games via a subscription off Valve.

Did you start up the games at least once after installing before you switched to offline mode? If you install a game and then attempt to play it offline, it won't work.
