Need help from you Gamers
It's income tax time, and i'm planning to buy a gaming machine. I see the OS available are Windows 7 and 8. I play a lot of the new and current game titles, but I have a ton of older games and want to be able to play them on my new machine. (Fallout, Thief, No One Lives Forever, some Adventure games, etc) What do you guys think of Windows 8 vs 7, and what kind of Video Cards do you prefer. Anybody using sound cards anymore (EAX)? Can't think of a better place to ask these questions than Steam

I have not found a game that runs on 7 that doesn't also run on 8. Most of the initial problems and concerns of Windows 8 have been resolved with the free 8.1 update. You can now boot directly to desktop and if you want the old Start menu functionality returned there are several 3rd party solutions to do this.

Video cards aren't difficult to choose. There are only 2 brands to consider and they both have similar priced products with similar performance. Set a budget and see which ones fall within it.

Sound cards are pointless unless you have thousands of dollars worth of audio equipment to make use of it. You won't notice a difference, otherwise.
I'll give you some really, really, really good advice.... stay as far away from Windows 8 as you can. If you are a true gamer and trust me on this, Windows 7 is the way to go!

Not too long ago I wanted to get all my devices on one platform. That included my tablet, my PC, and my phone. Well Windows 8 was just coming out and everything looked awesome! So I laid my iPhone down for the new Nokia Lumia phone and bought a new laptop and all. Trust me, I pushed the heck out of it (bc it was tough putting my iPhone down). Well about a month into it I was wanting to cut my wrist..LOL

Let's just say it was a horrible mistake. Now they did do the upgrade (my wife is still on Windows) and added the start menu. I'll put it this way, you can bet at least one time a night I hear her cussing or yelling ay her computer. They took the touchscreen idea and went too far with it, almost eliminating the mouse. Every time you move your mouse a certain way you get some random screen coming up... I could go on and on..

Well I got on one platform like I wanted.. and went all out. I got the new iPhone and a iMAC and I am living in heaven right now. My iMAC is nothing more than a complete BEAST! 300 plus FPS on all games and that's on full graphics. and well do I need to say anything about the iPhone?? Hell, Windows don't even have a solid Facebook App so what's that tell you?

Just my two scents though man :)

That's good... I did forget to mention in my post that I didn't give it a chance (8.1 that is) so I do want to be fair. I was just letting him know my experience.

I've been gaming since '97 and trust me, I loved my Windows.. XP was just my baby. And I will add I was nervous as hell getting this MAC for online gaming. But I am here to tell you, the MAC can get the job done.. that's for sure.

But I am glad 8.1 is doing you good :)

ive never used windows 8 before 8.1, i havent had a mac since the early 90s, screw that, i know its better now but back then finding a game was hard, and most the time i was going into computer stores and having to special order games for it. lol
lol.. yeh I read about the horror stories. Plus I've been wanting a MAC for designing. I do web/graphic designing (mostly as a hobby for my gaming community) and I am very pleased.
I play on Windows 8 pretty much since it aired and I can say that it runs everything 7 runs. My video card is a 570 GTX with 1,3GB VRAM. It is a tad older, but the newer Nvidia cards would be my choice right now still.
Thank You Echo, very informative. I feel for ya with Windows XP, I was like saying goodbye to a close friend. I now have Windows Vista Home Prem. 64bit and love it, but now I want to invest in a game machine. I'll probably go with Windows 7 64 bit. I researched the internet and a lot of people have mixed feelings on Windows 8. It seems that you can play most games without any problems, its just getting to know and getting around Windows 8, is the problem.
Thank You ReBoot for the input on the Video Card. it doesn't matter if its old, I'm interested in somethig that works and does the job. I will add this to my list od possible Video Cards and do some research and see if my budget can handle it.
Thank you Everybody Else for your comments.
I switched to Windows 8 and then 8.1) when I upgraded a few bits. I really haven't run into any issues at all in normal usage. Haven't found a game that won't run in 8 that would run in 7, and had no hassles getting drivers for my hardware.

There was an initial period of adjustment ('Oh, that's there now'), but unless you're using Windows Store apps, there's no need to use the tile screen other than as a full screen start menu, and if you don't like that, there's a wealth of start menu replacers (I quite like Start Menu Reviver, personally), most of them free or cheap.

Also using an Nvidia 570 incidentally, love it:)
Thank you Canti, I've read the reviews of Windows 8, and it seems that it will play most, if not all the games that Windows 7 will play. I just needed to here it from a gamer. Thanks again. I was a little concerned about the mouse problem that Echo was talking about. The reason I asked about sound cards is that I used to edit music I downloaded. I sometimes needed to increase the volume or fade out the ending of a track, etc. I also had some games that took advantage of EAX, just wondering if they ever got that fixed. It was great for games.
