Chat Audio Through Headset, Game Audio Through Speakers
Is there any way to set it like this, or am I restricted to one or the other?

I don't know, but I am looking at a similar problem, I play music down my mic through skype but I don't want my gameplay to be transmitted as well
I've not been able to do this since windows xp. I'm not sure so dont quote me but i think it's windows that stopped this or made it much harder to do since the old days of being able to split the audio devices.
ever tought of googling the tread title?

I found this doing that
((I use windows 8, don't know remember for sure this only works for windows 8)
Go into playback devices. Right click on speaker and set as default device, then right click on headset and there should be an option for set a default communication device. This should make voice chat go through headset, while keeping game audio going through speakers.
I don't know either, can't we just get something like a petition to complain to steam about. All I want is to be able to select which audio device my gameplay transmits through

this isn't what I want to do, I've got involved with VAC so I can play music through skype calls
Depends on what you use for it.

If you use Skype for example, you can set the in- and output voice via headphones (from Skype's settings) and otherwise use your speakers as the default audio output.

As in, Stereomix as the output?

The word is 'thought'. Figured I'll finally correct that one.

Virtual Audio cable is a software allowing you to mix up how you play your sound through different speakers on your PC. If you want help setting it up, I found a really good video is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-h_2AYN1EA

Nevermind
