I cannot disable steam overlay in any game.
I disabled the setting generally for all games and I have specifically disabled it per game within the properties settings and it just won't turn off. I have also tried using this launch option with no success +r_disableSteamOverlay 1

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Apparently the Steam user interface was incorrectly showing the game-specific settings as being disabled when the global setting was disabled.

The fix was to enable the global setting, then toggle the game-specific settings to make sure they are disabled, then disable the global setting again.
Try that with the overlay settings.

I have the same problem, did you find a solution?

did you restart steam after disabling the overlay in steam/settings/in-game?

No I didn't and I still have the issue.

Try ask Steam beta Client forum for bugs
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/

And try beta even, or flip back.

Same here, steam doesn't allow me to disable overlay in-game even if is turned off in settings still the overlay still shows... so annoying...

Same problem. No solutions. ALso a number of games do not have sound aor cannot play video (not same ones). E.g. EA : can't play video. BGS: can't play sounds exceptin video. Started with 2022 update which declared to be final for Win7 .

I have the exact same issue. It never came up until I played Cyberpunk 2077. It is the first game where I actually have to press shift+tab. When getting chased in a car, I have to hit shift to look back behind me, then tab to open my scanner to quick hack the pursuing car. Boom suddenly I'm looking at an overlay of my friends list and other useless information. Turning it off globally and for the individual game didn't work.

My ghetto solution was to remap the overlay to keys I will NEVER hit in any game, control + print screen. I have never used the overlay once in years of using Steam. It is truly a useless "feature" looking for an audience, and it doesn't even work ffs.

Would be nice if Valve actually fixed this at some point. Seems like the toggle just isn't working right.

As of 2/27/2024 this is still an issue. Extremely annoying while trying to play GTA 5, I can't sprint and change weapons without the overlay showing, despite it being disabled.

Had the same problem. I found out that it was missing a setting in localconfig.vdf called "EnableGameOverlay"

I turned ON the global setting (Steam>Settings>Ingame>Enable steam overlay while ingame) restarted steam and then the missing setting appeared on the file.

Turned off the global setting and now things are back to normal (no overlay)
(for those knowleageble enough: change value to 1 to turn it on, and to 0 turn it off)

Agreed to the person above, just enable steam overlay in global steam settings and then disable it in any game you want to.

Thanks. Now the overlay is disabled
