Notifications have been completely busted in general since the client update - sometimes I don't get any, then I get ones from days previous that have already been seen and others I just get random green alerts that lead to nothing. Total shambles from Valve and I wonder how many people don't realise they have been sent chat messages and the sender thinks they are being ignored..
Which is completely bollocks. I'm not a chatty type and rather reactive. So unless I really have something to say/ask, which is rare, or I get a notification I don't actually open the friends list. Which I don't do often, so I now often miss chats.
I'm still hoping it's a bug, but I'm fearing it's intended.
I use the "show as offline" mode but now I'm forced to use the invisible mode and check every now and then if I got a message.
I missed messages for days because of no notifications. I don't know how companies are capable of downgrading their sites/clients with each and every update..
This is the official answer. Maybe you understand them better than me...:

This client update has been an absolute catastrophe. Today I have been receiving notifications from dead threads where the last response was up to 6 days ago - literally every thread I have been in has received ghost notifications get I still get no notice if someone leaves a chat message for me when I'm offline so it looks like I'm ignoring them.
If there is nothing happening in the beta then this will probably persist up to and beyond Christmas at this rate. I wish there was an emergency client roll-back cos I'd take that in a shot.
Yes, it is ridiculous, a downgrade.
just more reasons for me to not use this proprietary pozware
