Steam desktop icons blank after most recent Windows update

After this happened to me I noticed many other people were having the same issue issue. If you google the issue, you will find 100 instances of bad advice on how to fix it.

If you haven't found a fix for this yet, for me it was caused by the most recent windows update. All I had to do was right click a blank icon, select properties, and where it says 'opens with', click change, then click 'internet browser'. All my icons instantly came back.
