(PC) When Steam is running, playing games from another launcher with a controller does not work properly
Hi
I have this problem I can't figure out.

If I have Steam running, and play a game from another launcher (Assassins Creed: Valhalla via Ubisoft Connect for example), the controller does not work properly.
It stutters and seems to jump rapidly between keyboard / mouse controls and controller controls.
If I quit Steam, it works as intended.

Has anyone else seen this?
And more importantly, how to fix it?

Thanks

It's normal. Because Steam supports a lot of gamepads it will take control over it.

So you need to quit Steam to use your gamepad on other launchers. But it's not like I've had much luck getting my PS5 or PS4 gamepad to work naturally on other clients unless I use a third party program to make it detect it.

Normal you say, but it didn't use to be like this. I would say it has been like this for the last year or two, not before

Not with gaming, but if steam is running in the background. I can't type in a browser. Since the new UI. I have to shut down the steam launcher first.

For gamepads this has been a thing since they started to support them.
I've had to fiddle with PS4 gamepads quite a bit with other launchers and shutting down Steam was one of the things I often had to do while also launching DS4.

Since the new UI? Steam changed it's UI around 2019 last time. The login window got a slight update but I doubt that has any effect on any internet browser you use.

If it was a widespread issue forums would be filled with complaints about just that bug.

Steam, settings, controller, disable the things for controllers (it opens big picture mode for that)

OMG. I was having troubles with my Razer Wolverine controller. AC V would recognize it maybe one time in 20 restarts of the game. I looked all over the web for a solution and found nothing. Then finally this thread. It absolutely was Steam running in the background causing the problems and I never would have figured it out if not for this thread.. Thank yu so much!!!
Now that i read this topic again prior to my post about the setting, people actually closed steam to play with controllers on other launchers and thought that was expected behaviour?

Good that there is a setting to disable this "feature".

Solution: Steam - Settings - Controller - at the bottom, there are 2 options "Desktop Layout" and "Guide Button Chord Layout," click on "edit." Then, click on "edit layout" and delete all the commands assigned to all the buttons on your controller. Alternatively, click on "current layout," then go to the community layouts and download layouts that don't have any commands in them. It's that simple.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
