Where is the QR code?

Ok, so I updated my Steam phone app. I'm trying to log in but it wants to scan a QR code. Where is the code?

This was very confusing to me too at first and I think a lot of posters here are confused in both directions - hopefully this will clear it up.

The app on my phone recently updated and I hadn't run it since. I also had to, for some reason, reconnect my Prime account to steam to redeem an in-game reward, and linking them required a code from Steam Authenticator. So, I opened Steam on my phone to get the code and it asked for my login/pass to the app.

I typed that in and it took, then immediately went to the screen saying "Scan a QR code". Since the app is all different from the upgrade, this felt like it was now part of the login process for the app. But it's NOT. It's just the authenticator screen of the app now.

I was now signed in, and that QR code scan is what you'd use instead of the old alpha code to login to other apps & devices. But the Amazon link feature doesn't currently support it, so I hit the "show a code" button and it gave me the old alpha code, which I typed into Amazon and it linked back up.

It's just a confusing coincidence that immediately after logging in to the app it gives you a screen asking for a QR code.

So in summarum, you now need one confusing app that does nothing else useful than just Steamguard. Then you need an another app Steam Chat for chatting, one of the two key features for mobiles in my opinion.
Instead of having one good app that included everything you need, now you need two crappy apps to do the same.

Way to go Steam.

This has got to be the dumbest setup for authenticating I've ever seen! As someone who has used 2FA and cold storage for years, this is straight backwards! I would love to know the actual details of how this connection via Steam is encrypted and secured since it is using an active internet connection to verify credentials.

Dear Valve - terrible implementation of a new feature with zero proper explanation. The app itself should cover why we're seeing this, and threads like this (essentially having folks think they're locked out of their accounts on mobile until they find this mysterious QR code) simply should not exist, especially with a company as seasoned as Valve is.

That part of the app is like amateur hour, I guarantee they collected zero feedback during the development of this update.

You said use the QR code as recommended... but where is that even showing up? Have you actually seen a QR code pop up somewhere? I know we can use the text codes, but where is the QR supposed to pop up?

The QR code shows up on the Steam sign-in page and the app is used to scan that.

Way to go backwards Steam! I had to google this QR nonsense which brought me here. So instead of having one app to do everything now you have to have two. One for your account and one for chat. I don't think so. I don't need steam on my mobile that bad.

I've given "Take My Points" awards to everyone I could who posted here with the same problem because this phone app update was a mess no one deserves to have to go through. I don't like broadcasting good deeds but I don't want Steam to flag mass rewards. F- you Steam. You shouldn't be making phone apps when you can't even count to 3.

I'm still pretty confused with what the main problem is... Do we not understand how to set up the new steam guard? Is there still a problem where you are being asked to sign in with a QR code on your phone?

It's confuse: It's not asking us to scan any code, it's just starting on the SteamGuard page of the app. Use the buttons on botton of the screen to change pages.

The problem was that when Steamguard asks you to scan the QR code, it doesn't say where you're supposed to find the QR code. It doesn't say where it is displayed or anything. It was just a really odd setup

Such an unneccesary change. Constant QoL that are negative from so many different vendors. Change isnt good if it isnt needed. THIS was not needed. Had to type in literally 15 codes as I stripped it off and added it back because the update dropped my PW so couldnt do ♥♥♥♥.
