Steam still doesn't support the microphone input of several ASUS Xonar soundcards
Today I bought myself new headphones, a microphone and the Asus Xonar U5. After setting everything up I noticed while playing that apparently Steam doesn't recognise any voice input from my microphone. I was able to talk to people on Skype and every other application that I had. It's literally just Steam.

If I google "Steam Asus Xonar Microphone problem" I get a few threads in forums with different people who have the same problem. And the only way to fix it is to set the soundcard to USB 1.0, removing most of the soundcard's functionality.

I found several threads here on the steamcommunity forums, according to them both external and internal cards affected.

Come on, this really shouldn't be that hard to fix.

If official Asus drivers give you headaches just give a go Uni Xonar drivers (works much better). Cheers

Asus just released (2015/06/16) a driver to fix this issue on the U5, not sure about other cards.

Works like a charm, kudos to you ASUS.
Make sure to run the installer as admin otherwise it will fail.

Where can I download that driver? Cuz I would love to try it out. I can't find it on Asus website though. I'm using Asus Xonar U5 and looking for a fix to the Steam issue aswell :/
Just go to the Asus Website. Check their drivers/support section. It's right there.

Sorry about my previous post, I wasn't clear enough on what I wondered about. I've already checked the Asus support section where you download all the drivers etc. I've got the latest driver(that I can download) for my Xonar U5 from there, but Doulasa mentioned a few posts back that Asus had released a driver on 2015/06/16 for the Xonar which fixes the steam issue. However I can't see a driver released in 2015/06/16 on the Xonar U5 page(the latest driver for me was released 2015/04/27 which is the one I'm using atm). I'm just a bit confused to read about a driver that I can't see or download from the support page. Because I really want to fix the problem. If someone is able to download that driver I would be really happy if someone could post a download link here. Tyvm :)

Do you happen to be using Windows 8? The release data/drivers I mentioned are in the Windows 7 section.

Windows 8 latest driver seems to be on 2015/04/27 but it says in the description "Fix Mic issue under Steam." so it should have fixes this problem.

If it not, then try giving the Windows 7 version a try? It should be compatible with Windows 8.

Thanks for your reply. I am using Windows 10 atm and for the driver I'm using the Windows 8.1 drivers and they work on Windows 10 soundwise but the Steam issue still remains. I tried the Windows 7 driver out as you suggested and Sonic Studio kept on crashing when I tired to launch it(the steam issue also presists with the Windows 7 driver on Windows 10), so I gave up and reinstalled the Windows 8.1 driver.

I've asked Asus about the Steam issue and they say that they are working on drivers that support Windows 10 for all their components. But unfortunately they couldn't give an answer on when these would be released(niether if the Steam fix would be included in the driver). I'll wait until Asus releases the drivers and hope for the best(hopefully not too long since thousands are in the same boat as me and waiting for Windows 10 support for their components).

I have the very same Problem with my U7 and Win10. And seeing how the Technical Preview Of 10 was available for months, I am really mad at Asus! They never get their drivers right...

I got myself a U7 and a new headset yesterday and I was experiencing the same problem. Mic works in all other windows programs but not steam, but I did manage to fix it to my satisfaction.

This information on a fix is related to Windows 7 x64, and the Asus Xonar U7.

At the time of writing Asus have 2 drivers versioned 7.0.11.19 on their website for the U7 ( http://www.asus.com/uk/Sound_Cards/Xonar_U7/HelpDesk_Download/ ). The top one (2015/02/04) has a vastly superior interface for the soundcard but the mic doesn't work in steam; the second one (2014/01/22) has a much worse interface but the mic works in steam.

So, what I did was to download both. I installed the good software and accompanying driver using the latest download from Asus. I then downloaded and extracted (but did not run the installer for) the older drivers. I then went into the mic settings (via right click of the speakers icon in the bottom right tray, clicking recording devices, selecting the mic and clicking the properties button). On that screen (the general tab) there is a "controller information" section with a properties button - click that, and then go to the "Driver" tab of the new window. From here you can select "Update Driver...", then "Browse my computer for driver software", then "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" then "Have Disk...". Now browse to the location you unRar'd the second (older) drivers (and choose the driver from this path in the archive "Xonar_U7_7_0_11_19_WHQL\U7-7.0.11.19(W7-3.11-WHQL)\WIN7\SoftwareDriver\Driver\ASUSU7.inf"). Hit okay, and finish up, restart your computer and if you're as lucky as me you'll find that you can now use your mic in steam (in USB 2.0 mode) and also use the nice new Asus U7 interface.

Note that you can roll back the driver if you have a problem. I don't guarantee this will work for you, of course, but it does for me. I thought I'd post this to help out anyone else who happens to find this thread when Googling for answers for ages like I was!

Oh HELL YEAH, MoX Farrow, this works super fine. Such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ issue, my god!

It feels like files from old build of drivers are screwing with possibilities of new ones.
Virtual surround became really weak.

well i tried this fix where you try to choose the older drivers while having the newer ones installed, but windows tells me that "the best possible drivers are already installed" and that's it. Any ideas how i could fix it?
