Poor video streaming trailer performance?
Anyone else getting this? I can play HD Youtube, Netflix etc, but I'll be damned if I can watch a game trailer on Steam without it pausing all over the place. I certainly don't have great internet but it's enough for most streaming video.

Not so bad except that the Steam player doesn't appear to do a lot of caching when you hit pause, so waiting for it to pre-load and then hitting play helps for about 5 seconds.

Anyone else getting this?

FWIW - I'm in Australia on Internode.

My ocd insisted I find an answer and I did, this guys reddit post has made Steam store load tons faster and the game trailers work small or fullscreen. :)

Create a steam shortcut to desktop.
Right click it and go to it's properties.
In the "Target" field add " -tcp" after the path so it looks something like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -tcp
Run steam using this shortcut.
Profit!?

Ok wtf Valve? Always thought it was my sub-par hardware so this is it, Steam officially sucks!

My solution:
Buy Steam games trough Humble Store[www.humblebundle.com], the trailers are YouTube embeds so working perfectly.

(FYI. The sales are just as good and I like how they give 10% to charity with an option to get half of that to your wallet. Also they obviously don't force us to activate everything so works as an alternative to that gift copy inventory hoarding we can't do on Steam anymore -.-)

How would in-home streaming settings help if I've never used in-home streaming?

(Tried anyway and didn't work but didn't really make sense in the first place so not surprised.)

You'd be surprised how settings end up interacting due to re-used code. This improved things for me for one or two updates. =\

I don't like the -tcp solution even if it does work since it pins you to a particular invocation/shortcut of steam. The thing that has worked for me twice on two different machines is to set the "number of software encoding threads" to a higher value. It defaults to "automatic" and I've set mine to 3 which totally solves the problem for me. Go to the menu Steam/Settings/In-Home Streaming and press the "advanced host options" button. "Number of software encoding threads" is in a dropdown. Try setting it to something other than automatic. Like I said, my setting is 3 and everything runs without a hitch finally.

Thank you very much, this solved it for me.

It's 2017, I've had this issue through 6 years of service. Come on Valve!
Using the -tcp option seems to work - and probably the solution used above (haven't tried), but I just don't know why this is a thing still. I have a 20mbps line and 4K videos stream better than trailers on Steam.

Yes indeed, it tells you that Valve are ignoring the problem.

Steam videos work perfect for me, are you sure the issue isn't on your side?

Given that the behaviour changes when we change nothing, and then we have to do new things to fix it, and that you regularly see Steam client patching when you boot up... yeah. Pretty sure. At most it's due to the open nature of Windows, and Steam is failing to account for that.

I just wanted to report that in another attempt to fix the horrible video playback in Steam, I ran Tronscript v10.2.3 from Reddit's r/TronScript group, and this also did not fix the problem.

Fullscreen video playback is still extreemly choppy and hard to watch in Steam ONLY on my Windows 10, Intel Core i7, 12 GB Ram system with GeForce GTX 750 Ti.

Youtube, VLC and any other fullscreen video works great, just not Steam videos.
