Size of Steam on Harddrive
heh, just wondering - yesterday I de-installed some games that I hardly ever play to free up disk space and as I was shocked to see that the steam app takes up more disc space than any of the games I got so far.

That can't be right, I don't mind saving games online although I really don't play on other computers (at least for now) but man that's worse than all those useless windows programs that eat your harddrive space ...

Is there anyway to reduce the amount of disk space the steam app uses up?

Uninstall Steam games.
And you can always use NTFS compression.

Uninstalling Steam and all the games is not an option I'm currently still playing them ...

And I'd rather not mess around with my compression settings or whatever just to reduce a ridiculous large app just so I can manage games I bought.

Ug, that is why I prefer GOG - their downloader is such a tiny app *sighs*

Anyone got any useful tips - like turning off features or something to make Steam smaller? I really don't need that community stuff, as I anyway use the browser if I ever look things up here.

There was this really awful huge graphic intensive view option - can I de-install parts of that to reduce the size?

There are no Steam features to disable.
NTFS compression is not a problem. There are no settings to mess with either. You just set it in the folder properties.
How large is steam for you? How large are your games?

Just checked, already got the NTFS compression active :(

Ehm Steam is 27 GB yes 27 GB! Steam takes up as much space as Resident Evil and Arkham City together *sighs*

All in all my Steam Games take up about 40 GB ...

I really do not see why steam has to be that huge - the least they could do is offer a slimmed down version for people who don't really use it for anything but the games.
The steamapps folder contains the games.

Steam never takes 27GB. Are you sure you don't count the steamapps folder?

Oh, yeah, the folder is about the size of the games ... what a relief ...

It's just weird that in the system program overview it lists Steam as taking up 26,9 GB and then all the games individually with their size and that amounted to more so I thought it was Steam + Games.

Still don't get why Steam is listed with such high GB but if it isn't actually taking up that much space ... good.

Thanks for the help - especially for something I might have figured out if I had been able to think about it. (The unpleasant sunny weather isn't good for my head or my mood - got so upset at this :P)

here: http://abload.de/img/steamsizel2s1y.jpg < to show I'm not totally crazy

Another thing that happens: If you reinstall windows and run steam again, it isnt even showing in the list.

So, next time just check folder sizes.
