Black/no video when playing YouTube videos in Steam browser
So I've tried playing some YouTube videos that show up on my Activity feed and they play, but with the audio only playing and black video. These vids work fine when viewed in Firefox or Chrome, but in the Steam browser, there's no video. Anything I can do?

Steam browser plays YouTube videos with a blank screen and audio only. The same problem in Chrome browser can be fixed by disabling hardware acceleration and restarting browser. Enabling/disabling hardware video decoding in Steam > Settings > Interface (and restarting) does not fix it. I can't find any other Hardware settings in the Steam browser. Anyone else solved this problem?

Uninstalled Flash player. Checked for Video card driver updates & Windows (7 64-bit Pro) Updates (none available).

According to... https://www.youtube.com/html5 ... the (in-game) browser should work. But it doesn't.

And now I am getting a blank "Steam Update News" popup every time I exit a game.

Seems likely that YouTube or Steam have broken some codecs.

Reinstalled Adobe Flash ActiveX (for IE).

I can now play youtube videos, such as this link http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=518670620, (by R-click + Copy Link Address) in CHROME or INTERNET EXPLORER browsers but NOT STEAM browser.

So, it looks like the problem is entirely with Steam.

OK, pinned it down to being a Steam BETA client problem (does not affect standard release client).

Filed a bug report... http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/523897653293580861/

a4nic8er: I actually use the standard Steam client and I still have this issue.

Sorry to hear that. I found your post yesterday, when searching for info on the problem. Today I nailed down that my issue was only with the beta client.

You can test if your Steam browser is HTML5 compliant by following these steps.

1. Right-click this link and ' Copy Link Address' .. https://www.youtube.com/html5

2. Start any steam game.

3. Shift + Tab to bring up game overlay.

4. Click 'Browser' (down at bottom, middle of overlay)

5. Replace the address at the top of the browser with the link.

6. Note whether any of the codecs under "What does this browser support?" do not have a blue tick.

If they all have blue tick the problem is not the browser itself. If that is the case, I would uninstall all copies of Adobe Flash Player, restart Steam, and try viewing a YouTube video again.

On the YouTube HTML5 page, the only box that doesn't have a blue checkmark is "MSE & H.264". Unisnstalling Flash didn't do a thing to change it.

For me, the problem has been resolved with an update to the Steam Beta yesterday. The beta client also does not have "MSE & H.264" support, but YouTube videos now play correctly in Steam (main and in-game browsers). So the issue is not that codec/support issue as I incorrectly assumed.

Yeah, my tests over the last 2 days have shown that Adobe Flash has no effect whatsoever. The problem occured using Steam Beta with or without flash installed and, since the beta update, it doesn't occur any more with or without Flash installed. Sorry, I was trying to determine the possibility that it did.

So, those two factors can be eliminated.

Another common denominator between myself and at least one other who had this issue was that we were both running Windows 7 64-bit. Are you? Or another 64-bit operating system?

If you are, opting into the Steam Beta client may resolve the issue for you.

Otherwise, you may want to submit a bug report (even if you aren't using the beta client).
You will need to provide details of your operating system, steam version, and the issue you are experiencing.

I'm no longer on Windows 7. Back when I started the thread I was, but now I'm on Windows 10.

64-BIT ?????????
NeoChaos Sep 18, 2015 @ 6:32pm
Whoops, sorry, yes 64-bit for both.

Just tried the beta client and it's still a no-go.

Update your flash

Download the 'non ie' version and it will update steam's version of flash
a4nic8er Sep 18, 2015 @ 6:36pm
Ok, so it seems the issue is likely to be within your system somewhere, maybe an outdated driver, or missing Windows update, or a broken codec.

Personally, I would check for driver and Windows updates and then submit a bug report if the problem persists.

*edit* As I posted above, Flash has nothing to do with it. Satoru doesn't even say which "non IE" version and obviously doesn't know that YouTube and Steam now use HTML5.
