Windows 10 Steam games do not detect GPU

Just recently upgraded from 8.1, installed the latest windows 10 nvidia driver for my 970M. Yet my games such as skyrim and Global offense are using the integrated GPU. Infact, the skyrim launcher does not detect my 970M. Device manager shows the 970M with no issues so what do i need to do?

Anytime u update the NVIDIA Drivers (or other drivers) they revert back to default settings.
Go into NVIDIA Control Panel and set the NVIDIA GPU as the Default under Manage 3D Settings.

I have tried that but they are still using the integrated GPU. Either that or windows 10 has severely degraded the performance of the 970M

Set the games to use the dedicated GPU in the Nvidia control panel.

You'll have to force the Nvidia card via the Nvidia Control Panel

What SPECIFIC DRIVER VERSION are you running?

I have the Geforce Windows 10 driver version 353.62. I have set the games to use the dedicated GPU in the control panel but i still get single fps during Skyrim which NEVER happened before i upgraded, so im assuming it is still using the integrated GPU. I wonder, since i merely upgraded and didn't clean install windows 10, could that be an issue?

Try disabling the integrated GPU via the BIOS settings and see if that forces a redetect of the GPU.

reboot the system, when the BIOS splash pops up hit the key it tells you to to enter the "setup". Navigate the menus to find the setting that says what GPU is default. Or disable the onboard if it gives you that option. Make sure your monitor is plugged in to the dedicated card and you should be good to go if nothing else is the issue.

Nvidia is dragging there feet releasing drivers, AMD haves all there GPU drivers out

Many developers will wait until a later, stable, build of a preview product before they release drivers for that new OS.

I recommend that you check with Nvidia support about their plans to support Windows 10.

Agent, I accessed the BIOS but i could not find a particular setting that tells me which GPU is default. So i guess that's out the window. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Thanks for the links OLD MAN, this can be quite useful for any future issues that will inevitably arise from this new release.

Any other suggestions? Perhaps a clean install? Could it be that i have to uninstall Skyrim and reinstall it?

OK so i have solved my problem by... going back to 8.1. Games work fine now and SKyrim is most certainly using the 970M. I guess i will have to wait a while until i upgrade.

Just do a clean install; u can still revert the OS if need be.
But Clean install will just mean no drivers / apps carried over; which really is best, cause it's usually the old crap u have on the system causing issues.

Like the previous OS; just get the latest Intel HD GPU Drivers + NVIDIA Mobile GPU Drivers. After both are installed; go to NVIDIA CP and set the NVIDIA GPU as the default; then games will run off that, always.
