Will downloading Steam on my Macbook Pro ruin it?
So as you can tell by my name, i like Terraria. I just found out recently that Terraria was playable on Mac now. So of course i want to play it. But there is only 1 problem. Im not to sure about downloading it on my Macbook Pro. I have the one from late 2012, 2.4 GHz, Intel Core i5, 4GB of memory, Mac OS X version 10.7.5. I have looked all over the World Wide Web and cannot find anything on this. So i would really appreciate it if some people could help me out and give me some tips/answers/relatable topics/etc. Anything to help me out on this. Thank you and im looking forward to getting some responses! :D

How should Steam be able to ruin your Macbook Pro? Makes no sense at all.

you see i dont know why it would im just asking if maybe it could slow down my computer or damage it in some sort of way.

Steam cant damage your macbook

Unless it's actual real life Steam, that can be dangerous as heck. But the software itself is harmless.
It's literally used on millions of computers.

what i mean is will downloading steam cause my macbook to be more susceptible to viruses?
Tobi Jul 28, 2015 @ 6:06pm
no, as long as you dont blindly click on every link someone sends you over steam.
Cathulhu Jul 28, 2015 @ 6:07pm
That's like asking if installing a mediaplayer makes your macbook more susceptible to viruses.
Steam does not distribute viruses. That is a ridiculous idea. And here i thought the notion that Steam might be able to break a macbook would be stupid. That is even more illogical and unreasonable.

i know but i just want be extra careful because about a month ago i had to take my macbook pro to the apple store to get it fixed because my 13 year old son thinks he knows what hes doing. I thought that macs couldnt get any viruses and they cant but i still dont want a web page to take 10 minutes to load completely.

You can set Steam not to load on boot, and close it when it is not in use.

If you are concerned that Steam will slow down your computer, you can set it not to run when the computer is powered on. Then when your son is done playing his games, you can exit Steam. This will mean there should be no impact on the speed of your computer.

Are you sure thats it because when i went to the apple store the guy had to remove all downloaded things on the computer to bring the computer back to its normal speed. My son knows how to shut it off, thats not the problem. The problem was the things he downloaded. So i need to know if Steam will do the same.

Having a program on your hard drive does not inherently utilize resources such as CPU, GPU, or memory. It only utilizes resources if the programs runs in the background.
