Ubuntu linux, broken software updater

I can no longer check for OS updates, or run synaptic package manager.. when I try

"E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

I've updated the steam client from the client itself, with no issue but can not update ANY other software

no, while I am a linux user, I'm not really familiar with apt via CLI, the built in software updater and synaptic package manager (which is what the error above is from) keeps my system updated normally, but now fails.. again due to the error above

if you know a magic incantation for apt to fix this I'd really apreciate it :D
