I was able to get rid of the error by opening Software Sources and unchecking all Steam-related repositories in the Additional repositories tab. Obviously, Steam will not be updated in this way, but at least your other software can be updated.
If you have a launchpad account please add your self to the list of affected users (Button at the top of the bug report), so that Linux Mint will fix this issue. Full bug report is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1478030
open a terminal and type:
cd /var/lib/apt/lists/
sudo rm repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en
All was well after that. Looks like there was an error in their update servers and us users were sent a bad repo file.
