It appears there is an error in the Steam repo. Here is the error message:

the installer is missing now. http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/archive/precise/steam_latest.deb ...just gives "Welcome to nginx!"

Well it's annoying since Linux Mint doesn't let me update anything on repo errors.

Truly annoying thing to wake up to.

I have the same problem on Linux Mint 17.2.
I was able to get rid of the error by opening Software Sources and unchecking all Steam-related repositories in the Additional repositories tab. Obviously, Steam will not be updated in this way, but at least your other software can be updated.

I think Steam upgrades through itself, but this fix did correct things for me, too, for now.

I used a similar fix and added details here to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1478030/comments/1
If you have a launchpad account please add your self to the list of affected users (Button at the top of the bug report), so that Linux Mint will fix this issue. Full bug report is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1478030

hi all

This worked for me. YMMV
open a terminal and type:

cd /var/lib/apt/lists/
sudo rm repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en

All was well after that. Looks like there was an error in their update servers and us users were sent a bad repo file.
