Steam on Linux repo error

It appears there is an error in the Steam repo. Here is the error message:

Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

open a terminal and type:

cd /var/lib/apt/lists/
sudo rm repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en

All was well after that. Looks like there was an error in their update servers and us users were sent a bad repo file.

It seems fixed now. But your command worked for me! :D

This worked for me

sudo rm -fr /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir -pv /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo apt-get updated sudo apt-get upgrade

(the first part when i entered it, it didnt seem like it did anything but i think it did )

The following worked for me:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
sudo apt-get update

Apparently this is a 4 year old solution ( http://askubuntu.com/questions/30072/how-do-i-fix-a-problem-with-mergelist-or-status-file-could-not-be-parsed-err ) but it worked just fine for me.

I tested this too but even though it worked.. it also removed some stuff.. which is a little bit odd

I tested this too but even though it worked.. it also removed some stuff.. which is a little bit odd

It's like pulling out a decayed tooth, or an inflamed appendix. Sometimes, you have to remove something for everything else to work right.
