When Installing Games My External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting
For a couple of days/weeks now after literally no changes my hard drive has been disconnecting when using steam and at no other time, this has caused games to crash and for me to be unable to install games, I have tried using a different USB port and I have also tried formatting the hard drive, I've tried setting the server which I download games from different but that has had no help whatsoever, I have also gone into my power settings to make sure that the USB ports don't power off to save power. I have also tried using USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. Any help would be appiciated!

well, I'm no expert but, if you format your external hard drive then you've lost all files stored on that drive hence nothing left on that drive.....as for not being able too install any games that may be a missing dll file, or exe file, since you reformatted your drive have you had other problems???

1. in device manager change power saving options for USB controllers - Root USB hub, Generic USB hub - Power management unchek "allow to turn off this device to save power"

2 in Power management switch off stop HDD after %% min

3 if your HDD have problem you may test&erase whole HDD with Victoria from MagicBoot Disk 2.0
(it erase all data, include hidden, scan surface, and if there is damage to the surface, it try to make remaping - reassignment of defective clusters in the spare area)

4 officially Installation on a external hard drives are not supported, especially if it is NOT USB3.0 (due to low speed and damage settings at library on "suspending" the hard drive because of default power management settings)

Done all of the above... it literally only happens when I start an installation on steam and nothing else

I know that I lost all the files, that was the intention, I thought it may have been a virus causing the disconnection, and there were some things flagged up in a virus scan which weren't being removed. And I've removed and installed steam multiple times, it's not the installations wont start, it's that part way through the installation it will stop, and the hard drive will disconnect and reconnect quickly enough for steam to stay up, but for the installation to stop.
