Fallout 3 GOTY Download Problem
I purchased Fallout 3 GOTY yesterday from Steam and it refuses to complete its download. It says that 7.2gb/7.2gb have been downloaded, but refuses to complete. It says update required but cannot download the update because the download speed trickles down to zero. I have tried to start the game from the .exe but it instantly quits. Please help!

Are you too getting the text box which says ''busy writing to disk''? i'm having the same problem with dragon age origins

I've gotten that before but it then disappears. My problem is that the download is getting caught up on 99% and won't finish.

Edit: Am downloading Windows updates now to see if that fixes it.

Didn't do a thing. Any suggestions are welcome.
For the record, what are the specs again (I'm going to try thinking out of the box) ?

Also: this may sound stupid... but have you tried deleting local content and then re-installing via. Steam and seeing if it completes?

Yet another suggestion (if you haven't done so already); have you tried verifying the game cache files even if the download is not complete.

P.S. A person from another thread, with a diffferent game, found success in turning a DMZ option off for their router. Might want to try that in addition to everything else I've said.

Hello,

Sorry I'm late replying, I only have access to my desktop every other week. My computer is:

CPU: Intel Xeon CPU 5150
OS: XP SP 3
Graphics: ASUS EAH6670 with AMD drivers

Edit: Yes, in fact I have done that (deleting local content, reinstalling) at least 10 times now.

Interesting suggestion regarding the DMZ option. I need to turn it off? I had always thought turning it on helped issues similar to this. Regardless, I will try that and see if there is any change. Thank you for your help.

No joy on the DMZ idea.

A recap on the problem with more specifics:

I start the download. Everything goes okay. The network usage as displayed by Steam averages around 3-5 mbps. Estimated time of completion is ~30 minutes. When the download reaches 99% it displays 7.2 / 7.2 gb completed, then the network usage begins to tank below 1 mbps until it reaches zero. Simultaneously the time of completion drops to 0 seconds, then begins climbing back up into minutes and then hours. Eventually an error is displayed with the message: "An error occurred while updating Fallout 3: Game of the Year (connection timeout)." Then the game begins attempting to re-download from the same point at which it goes on and off between being queued and attempting to download. I have attempted every solution I have encountered on the threads.

Side note: I have ordered a Dell XPS 8700; it should arrive sometime in August. I will attempt to install the game on that system to determine if it is my computer that is the source of the problem (in case anyone is wondering: no I am not buying the computer just because of this game).

Sorry if we've covered this before but can you check or confirm an antivirus of some sort isn't preventing you from fully downloading the game? No game on Steam is a virus but my Norton software has done that to me once or twice and it usually prompts me when an action like deleting an .exe is performed.

My antivirus has expired so that can't be an issue.

I appreciate the input. I'm sure that is a helpful article for most but none of it worked for me.

Actually I didn't directly connect via ethernet cable but that's not possible for me.

Are you sure one of its functions aren't preventing the download.

I mean, it sounds ridiculous but not impossible.

I guess it could be possible. However, task manager is not letting me end those affiliated processes.

You should be able to end almost any process providing you're the admin of that PC.

Yeah I am the admin but McAfee is very controlling. I uninstalled it. I suppose now I will restart the download again but I doubt the end result will be any different.
