Summer Adventure 2014: how can we get trading cards?

As per the FAQ

You can get trading cards in a few ways: as a reward for purchasing from the Steam Store (1 card per $10 USD or equivalent), crafting game badges, voting in the Community’s Choice sale (1 card per 3 votes), by trading, or by purchasing them in the Community Market

I added funds to my Steam wallet because I kept getting duplicate cards from voting.

When I tried to buy the cards I needed, I got the message that because i added funds to my Steam wallet , I can't buy cards until the sale is over, which pretty much cuts me out.

Punishing people for adding funds to their wallet?

Another "brilliant" move from Steam. Needless to say, I won't be adding any more in the future.
