Problem with my bluetooth headset with steam
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm having some problems getting my bluetooth headset to work with steam.

It pairs perfectly fine with my computer, both audio recording and playback work fine. I went on steam and in the settings I switched the recording device to my BT headset. Tried testing it and it sort of didn't work. I say "sort of" because the sound bar (which shows the sound levels) definitely picked up my voice but it wasn't playing my voice back to me like it should.

So it turns out that when I set the recording device to my headset, it disables the audio playback into my headset. I'm playing music as a test, it works fine, my headset is playing the music. But when I click "Test Microphone" on the steam settings, the music stops and all audio playback is disabled to my headset.

The audio playback also works fine until I start up a steam game, when that happens the audio once again becomes disabled.

If I set the microphone as something else (my default laptop microphone) the audio playback works again and feeds properly into my headset.

So what is going on? How come I can't have both audio playback AND microphone working on my headset for steam? Its really frustrating.

One thing to add is that I managed to get the headphone playback/recording to work but only if my audio playback is set to mono. My headset mic does mono recording while my playback can be either mono or stereo. When I have it set to stereo, it won't work with steam games. But when I have it set to mono playback, the games will work and the audio will play but in mono playback which sucks and is unplayable for most games since stereo offers spatial awareness.

I requested friendship with you on steam. I would also like this to be fixed as well. Please give me any help that you can.

This is not a Steam issue, it's a limitation with bandwidth in the bluetooth 4.x and down versions. You can have two way communication in bad quality mono, or high quality stereo, but not both. :(

When you look at the properties for the bluetooth (recording) device, there should be a tab called Listen and a checkbox with "Listen to this device" next to it. I had a similar problem ages ago & I think this setting/checkbox needed ticking in order to hear the microphone.
(It may have nothing to do with your issue but is just a thought, hope you get it fixed).

Edit.- just noticed the date on this...

I think it’s a limitation of the software. I can’t voice chat with my headset microphone and listen on headset in stereo. I have to listen to a voice call in mono when using the same device microphone. A way to get around this is to use a secondary microphone, like on a webcam or built-in to a laptop. Then, one could use Bluetooth headphones for listening in stereo instead of mono. In mono voice chat sounds fine, but not everything else like video games.
