*SOLVED* PLEASE HELP!! Amnesia: the Dark Descent not working

So I played that game for about seven hours in Windows 8 with absolutely no problems, it was working perfectly. Then I updated to Windows 8.1 for no good reason and suddenly it doesn't work anymore. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game, but to no avail.
I've read about people having the opposite happen, where it won't work in 8, but then it works in 8.1, so I'm confused.
Opening the game will bring up the normal launcher window where you can configure settings. Starting the game from that brings up a black screen where some music plays but nothing happens after that. Sometimes after pressing the Windows button to go to the start screen, then reentering the game it will take me directly to the continue screen which is frozen. Mouse is nowhere to be seen unless I shift-tab into the Steam overlay, and after doing so the overlay doesn't appear but the mouse does. The game itself is still frozen and the mouse acts like there's nothing clickable.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times, verifying the game cache multiple times, and I even tried deleting Main_settings.cfg which is supposed to help with some crashing issues.

SOLUTION: as it turns out, it was my audio driver that was messing it up! Downloading the driver update fixed the problem and it seems to be working perfectly

Yes I have, I ran it in compatibility with Windows 8 and with Windows 7, neither worked

I'm really a computer n00b, so I don't know what that means. I believe all my drivers should be up to date, how do I check what they are?

Yes. Do you know what your computers video cards is?

Okay, so I checked, and my drivers are all up to date.
My graphics are either Intel® HD 4000 or 3000
