Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Forbidden - You don't have permission to access (trying to install)
I'm trying to install Steam for Linux, clicking "Install Steam Now" from http://store.steampowered.com/about and link points to http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb

All i get is this:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /steam/archive/precise/steam_latest.deb on this server.

Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at repo.steampowered.com Port 80

It has been like so for many days now. Why is it?

My last post went to off-topic automatically for some reason.

That exact same thing is currently happening to me.
And as expected, the apt-get install steam showed up with the same error

I got exactly the same problem.

Solved by doing "sudo apt-get install steam", which I should probably have tried first.

So i looked a bit farther around, and found a thread at http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/540744934481465247/ that listed

Try reviewing the Valve page on the Ubuntu site. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valve Full of step by step instructions. I personally installed mine from a terminal session.

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T ) type the following commands:
wget http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb
sudo apt-get install gdebi-core
sudo gdebi steam.deb

If you are more comfortable working in the GUI try the other install options as listed in the Wiki.

tried step one, failure

Having the same problem. It's starting to get anoying, I'm trying to install steam for about two days now and still they don't come up with some solution

One thing i noticed is that in the Ubuntu Software Center, they are shutting it down and there is no steam package, which was there a while ago. Do you think that would have to do with this problem?

Yeah I just noticed that too. Maybe some major update on steam client for linux?

Same here, on Qiana. I didn't realize that this thread showed up less than a day ago, maybe because of a lot more people downloading it from the steam sale?

Hi,

Can confirm that I got the same error but

sudo apt-get install steam

worked fine.

Regards

K
This is not good. Lots of Linux newcomers go to Steam website in attempt to install Steam, and end up with that "Forbidden" -window.

I am also having this problem. Posting to bump the issue for visibility. The command line process also failed and produced a 403 error.

For now, I was just trying out Linux for the first time. I will just have to jump back to Windows to get back on that sweet summer sale action.

Same error here and if I do sudo apt-get install steam, steam crashes on startup

I even tried getting the latest version from:
http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/pool/steam/s/steam/

but the issue is the same, steam crashes on startup.

How rude. 403 Forbidden. What kind of a company allows that to happen...
Kaetemi Jun 20, 2014 @ 7:46pm
sudo apt-get install steam-launcher
worked for me
