Mouse scroll wheel sensitivity?
A lot of games use the mouse wheel scroll to switch between items or slots, like switching guns in an fps or switching toolbar slots in Minecraft. I used to have a notched scroll wheel (where the wheel physically scrolled in increments or a set portion at a time) and in games the switching function always worked as intended, i.e. one notch = one switch.

My new mouse has a continuous scroll wheel, and in games the effect is that even the tiniest scroll will often switch 2 or 3 times instead of just once. For example in shooters it switches to my secondary weapon then right back to my primary weapon again, or in Minecraft it switches 2 or 3 slots over instead of just one. It's pretty much impossible to reliably scroll the precise amount required for just one switch at a time.

Is there any way to fix this? Maybe setting a scrolling threshold in a third-party program or something like that?

would help if you post what mouse you are using and did you install the software for it?

Oh yeah, I'm using the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000. The software It installed was a Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center. There's an option to customize wheel behavior, which lets you change vertical scrolling speed, horizontal scrolling speed, accelerated vertical scrolling, and an option to identify programs which don't scroll correctly.

One moment, I will post some pictures.

Thanks for the link Spoof but I'd like to avoid system wide changes if possible as I've set everything to the way I like it for everyday use. Plus the answer seems like some generic response for a laptop touchpad that was copy-pasted by a MS rep as a response. They're not the greatest at customer support.

Anyways, I found some settings that may help.

The bit about sending full lines of scrolling sounds like the way my notched mouse used to work, is it the same kind of setting here? If so that might let my new mouse work like the old one.

googled a bit it just seems to be how the mouse works.
I seen nobody with a solution for the scrol weel other than changing the buttons on the mouse a bit and using another method for weapon selection.

how about hooking up another mouse?

looking at the screenshots its seems pretty straight forward.
you just have to play with it see if you can make it work for you.
but I did not find anybody that has.

Alright thanks, I will play with it a bit more tomorrow when I have the time. I'll post back if I can get it to work.

Just a quick update here, I did test out the compatibility settings using Battlefield and Minecraft, and I am pleased to say they work! Scrolling is still incredibly sensitive, and even a tiny scroll will initiate a weapon/slot switch, but it doesn't switch multiple times any more. I can now pretty reliably switch just one slot on Minecraft or one weapon in BF.

I got this problem too for the steam desktop app. my scroll sensitivity set on windows settings arent even that high and it scrolls on chrome perfectly. but when scrolling in the steam store number of scroll lines are very high.
