How do I type a different language in Steam chat?
I don't really understand how to do this. I'm using an English keyboard and I set my computer to the Japanese keyboard with Microsoft IME. http://puu.sh/9sxll/a3104a9719.png

If I want to type in Japanese, I simply change the input method on my taskbar http://puu.sh/9swfX/9b89503e4c.jpg

But when I click in Steam chat, the icon goes away on the taskbar and I can't change my input method. http://puu.sh/9sxrW/22d0d9364e.jpg

I already set my Steam chat language to Japanese and set it to Hiragana, but I'm still typing in English. http://puu.sh/9swmk/ee874e512d.jpg

Key sequences also don't work anywhere. Left alt + shift does nothing across the board. http://puu.sh/9sxmy/622f1697ec.png

Can you type elsewhere and copy/paste into Steam chat? That's what I do for Russian.

Yup, that's what I've been doing. It's a bit inefficient.

Sorry, unfortunately I don't have a better answer for you.
You need to click the text field and then change the language on the language bar. The language bar allows for different programs to have different language preferences, so for example I can have my browser set to normal English while the notepad I use for Spanish notes is set to International mode so I can type the accents.

Another thing you can do is set a special keystroke to switch the language. I set mine to change to International mode when I press Ctrl+Shift+1, and back to US mode when I press Ctrl+Shift+0.

That's the problem - the language bar disappears when I click in the Steam chat text field.

That's weird. It works fine for me. Have you tried right-clicking the language bar and clicking "Restore Language Bar" to pop it out of the taskbar?

Yes. The language bar just goes away when I click in Steam chat.

Well that's just great, this has been moved to the Help and Tips section. Ironically, the place where I'll probably be getting the least amount of help. :(
Have you tried restaring Steam and/or your computer?

Restarting Steam fixed it. ありがとう!(Thanks!)

Although the key combinations still don't work, but I suppose that's an issue with Microsoft IME. Most buggy and wonky piece of junk I've ever had to use.

You need to have the language pack installed on Windows. You can change the keyboard language with Alt + Shift -key combinations.
