achievement unlockers.

Is that in violation of the steam terms, will you get banned for using such programs?

valve stoped caring about it years ago.
nobody has ever been suspended for it.

maybe if you use it while on a VAC secured server you risk a ban.

Some games also offer achievement tracking while Steam is in "Offline Mode". Those achievements will be unlocked when the user goes online again and all get the timestamp from that time and not from when they were actually unlocked.

The guy has just bought the game, so I don't think the offline mode is the answer, but could it be a shared game, how does achievements work when a game is shared to a new account?

Shared games earn achievements, just as if they were owned.

But no, it will be achievement unlocking software. Since achievements do not give any sort of "rank" or "points" or "rewards", there's no reason for people to do it other than showing off skill they wish they had.

you have your own achievements.

a game like poker night you only need to login on a system that has those achievements and you get them too.

so plenty legit reasons.

That's only for the 4 achievements that unlock the TF2 weapons, it must handle those in a specific way I guess.

Thanks to you, you guys.
Here's another question. If I share a game with a friend will I then gain hours played when he plays it and I am not online. Not as in hours played in this game, but as in the total amount of hours played over the past two weeks. Will that grow for me as he plays my shared game?

I would worry that the friend is not a cheater first.

it should all use his own profile or family share would be a bit pointless.

okay
Klasulen Jun 10, 2014 @ 7:56am
But will the fact that he is playing my shared game have an effect on my total hours played this week?

Whether or not using achievement unlocking programs can lead to a VAC ban is still an unanswered question, unfortunately. The truth is that there is some anecdotal evidence that appears to point to the fact that you can indeed be banned for using them, but it also has to be weighed against the fact that cheaters lie.

What I mean is, claims have been made by people who say they have been VAC banned "for nothing" while the most that anyone has been able to uncover concerning their activities was an achievement unlocker being used. This seems to suggest that it may be what got them banned, but they may also simply be lying abut having used other cheats, only the person making the claim truly knows. Valve has remained silent on the matter.

In addition, claims have been made that you can only receive a ban for using achievement unlockers if you use them while connected to a VAC server, which frankly makes sense to me. There has also been speculation that VAC will only ban for using achievement lockers to unlock achievements which grant in game items or perks of some sort, such as the TF2 items granted by the Poker Night games. Again, there is no real announcement or post by Valve to support any of these theories though, so theories they remain.

Since Valve is not and likely will not ever be forthcoming with the actual truth of the matter, as well they should not, it's safest to assume that you can be banned for using them, and that not using them is probably a wise choice all around. Not only that, but frankly it makes someone look rather silly and shameful when people find out that their "perfect record" is all a lie.

I value my achievements and I could not care less what other people do to them.
my achievements are for me to enjoy.
