Sniper Elite Nazi zombie army 2 disk installation
I have just purchased the retail copy of Sniper Elite Nazi zombie army 2. When trying to install the game from the disk I proceed through the normal installation process up to the point where a window tells me my installation is complete. This took about 2 seconds after the progressbars title tole me it was installing from disk. I now find that the game has a 3.6GB "Update". I do have uncapped internet. The problem is that there is no way the game would have installed in 2 seconds and i refuse to believe that the game has an update of this size. This leads me to believe that the full game is being downloaded online.

The QUESTION im asking is why should i need to download the entire game off the internet when i have the retail copy. This game is not the only one that wants to do this, infact many of the games that i have do the same thing when i try reinstall them.

The retail copy contains the games install files, why must i download the game if i can install it off the disk. I should be able to but steam rather trys to download it.

This is an issue for me because my average line speed is 100kbps and to download this game would take the whole day. Looking at a bigger picture, if someone had to format his computer and try reinstall all the steam games he has from their retail disks he will have to redownload all of them. Given the fact that internet speed is slow in a lot of countrys this may take up to a week for the user to finish getting their games back.

Can someone please tell me at what point steam decided to download games online instead of installing them straight from the disk which would save hours of time.

It's a practice that has been going on for half a decade now. Publishers either make a disc from partially or under developed versions, then since activation online is mandatory they decide whether they want to just issue a patch/update or download the full version of the game. The only reason they sell the disc based ones is because they still want the store presence and free advertising a disc version gives them. Disc based PC games are all but dead. If you don't like the practice talk to the publisher.
