Desktop icons turned into Globes
~_~

I deleted the icon, then made a new one and it's still a Globe.

So I went to the game folder (Steam>SteamApps>Common>GameFolder), left click the .exe and selected "Create a desktop shortcut" and all is fine but it still changes into a Globe after every reboot.

It's bugging me. Any fix?

What fixed this problem for me was:
Right click the icon and go to properties
Click change Icon and then choose Browse...
Go to wherever you have Steam downloaded
Click SteamApps
Click common
Find whatever game you are trying to fix
Click .exe
OMG, THANK YOU

FIX:
1.) Start your Task Manager (right click in the task bar at the bottom of the desktop and select "Start Task Manager")

2.) Click the "Process Tab at the top and then press the "E" key, this should take you straight to the "explorer" process, or just select it with your mouse. Right click and select "End Process". This will kill your DeskTop, but don't worry.

3.) At the top of Task Manager, select "File" and then select "New Task (Run)" In the little box that appears, type "Explorer" and press enter, your desktop will come back up and your icon should be correct. Happens to many people it looks like, spread this around if you can.

Although this has probably already fixed itself with a restart, but if it happens again in the future, try the above.

Thank you very much, closing explorer.exe and reopening it via CMD works quickly and effectively great job. :)

Happy this is still helping folks.
All i did was right click the globe and i pressed create a new desk top short cut and it fixed the problem
anyone have any idea what it is that causes this? I fell asleep with my pc on last night I can't figure out if it happened then or when I restarted it this morning. I wasn't paying attention. What causes this?
also about the thing where you can find the icons to all your games in steam\steam\games\ some of your broken icons may not work when changing to stuff from that folder so move what you need to another place then try it and it should work.

@Genocide: That's great, but some people have 100 or even 1000 globes. Go to the Steam folder Properties & remove the Encrypted tick.

Hey UberFiend, where is that encryption tick? Are you talking about the one under Properties> General> Advanced (in the attributes section)?
yeah... when I try to decrypt the shortcuts manually it can't, anyone have any ideas on how to decrypt the files?
Turns out this happens in Windows 10. You need to run Steam as administrator so that i can access the system properly otherwise you get corrupted icons. Also if your icons are blank, do a file integrity check first, while steam runs as administrator and then pick recreate icon.

If you’re still having this problem it’s a easy fix all you gotta do is right clicked on the globe icon then create shortcut then its fixed.
right click one of the games with globes, click properties, then click change, then click browser and thats it

So the games you already had shortcuts for have normal shorcut Icons, but only new Desktop icons have the globe?
I'll do some searching on the net tomorrow, I have to get to bed now, but you might want to try closing Steam, righ clicking the Steam shortcut and choose "Run as administrator" and THEN try having Steam put a desktop icon on the desktop for that game.

I'm not sure really, if your Steam installation is a little messed up, you can try opting into the Steam Beta Client, installing it, and then opt out back to the normal client. It's a shot in the dark, but it might fix your Steam client not making icons problem.

To select the beta, go to Steam> settings> account and select "change" in the "Beta participation" secton in the middle, then select "Steam Beta Update" (has really cool streaming feature right now), and then click "ok". Steam will update itself.
Do the same to uninstall the Beta Client.

I saw another guide that said the IconCache would rebuild itself, is that true?

Ok, if your problem has yet to solve itself, try this.

Open up "Computer" (Windows file exploere) and either paste this into the file path box to the left of the search box " %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local " or navigate to Users>Your Name>AppData>Local, and then delete a file named "IconCache.db" and THEN do the trick to stop and restart Explorer that I showed you above. Try this before you try that crazy Steam beta installation fix thing that probably won't work (LIke I said, a shot in the Dark)

Let me know how it turned out.
Thanks! Worked for me. Not sure if the new update or steam fked up the db...

Yes, the icon database rebuilds itself every time you update it (in our case we just make it start anew)

Just use "Open with..." - Internet Explorer (for Windows)
