Desktop icons turned into Globes
~_~

I deleted the icon, then made a new one and it's still a Globe.

So I went to the game folder (Steam>SteamApps>Common>GameFolder), left click the .exe and selected "Create a desktop shortcut" and all is fine but it still changes into a Globe after every reboot.

It's bugging me. Any fix?

None of mine are marked to encrypted, I wonder what the default is supposed to be?
Interesting thanks. I'll have another think.

Default is off.
What fixed this problem for me was:
Right click the icon and go to properties
Click change Icon and then choose Browse...
Go to wherever you have Steam downloaded
Click SteamApps
Click common
Find whatever game you are trying to fix
Click .exe
Keep the broken icons on your desktop and for each one go into steam and hit create desktop shortcut and it updates the icon. It worked for me good luck!

Ok, if your problem has yet to solve itself, try this.

Open up "Computer" (Windows file exploere) and either paste this into the file path box to the left of the search box " %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local " or navigate to Users>Your Name>AppData>Local, and then delete a file named "IconCache.db" and THEN do the trick to stop and restart Explorer that I showed you above. Try this before you try that crazy Steam beta installation fix thing that probably won't work (LIke I said, a shot in the Dark)

Let me know how it turned out.
That worked for me. Thanks.

So the games you already had shortcuts for have normal shorcut Icons, but only new Desktop icons have the globe?
I'll do some searching on the net tomorrow, I have to get to bed now, but you might want to try closing Steam, righ clicking the Steam shortcut and choose "Run as administrator" and THEN try having Steam put a desktop icon on the desktop for that game.

I'm not sure really, if your Steam installation is a little messed up, you can try opting into the Steam Beta Client, installing it, and then opt out back to the normal client. It's a shot in the dark, but it might fix your Steam client not making icons problem.

To select the beta, go to Steam> settings> account and select "change" in the "Beta participation" secton in the middle, then select "Steam Beta Update" (has really cool streaming feature right now), and then click "ok". Steam will update itself.
Do the same to uninstall the Beta Client.
Thanks ,it worked by opening Steam as administrator and then make a shortcut threw Steam ,ty very much
Running Steam as administrator worked for me as well, thanks a lot. (Deleting the "IconCache.db" didn't work btw)
Ok theres an easier way to do this - Right click the broken icon and click on properties. Then select the tab (web document), change icon and then a window will appear. Click on browse. Find your steamapps folder and find the .exe or application file and click on it and press open. Then select apply and you're done.

Look three post above yours. This does not work for everyone, sometimes this problem seems to be a corruption of the thumbnall cache, in which case either deleting the cache file or running Steam in admin mode (which gives Steam user privileges to update certain files) or a combination of the two are the only options.
deleting IconCache.db and then restarting explorer worked for me. What I noticed is that this happend to only for the games that I had installed in both my computers connetcted to the same lan and after I trasfered files form one to another through network. I don't know if this causes the problem but that's when it started for me.
It does this for me too, but I've got shortcut to Hammer and the Authoring Tools on here. The only one that isn't buggy is CS:GO, but the Portal 2 Authoring Tools and TF2 Hammer, like a few of my games, are just gone, either replaced by globes or a white, document-looking icon.

FIX:
1.) Start your Task Manager (right click in the task bar at the bottom of the desktop and select "Start Task Manager")

2.) Click the "Process Tab at the top and then press the "E" key, this should take you straight to the "explorer" process, or just select it with your mouse. Right click and select "End Process". This will kill your DeskTop, but don't worry.

3.) At the top of Task Manager, select "File" and then select "New Task (Run)" In the little box that appears, type "Explorer" and press enter, your desktop will come back up and your icon should be correct. Happens to many people it looks like, spread this around if you can.

Although this has probably already fixed itself with a restart, but if it happens again in the future, try the above.
I can't launch game either.
