Steam is covering my desktop with files
So, Steam said it needed an update today, and when I accepted it it covered my desktop with all the files that make steam work (I assume, they had names like debug and such, I am not good with computers) and even though I left them on the desktop when I was finally able to log in it treated my laptop as a new computer even though it is the only one I ever used, and once I got into the steam thing itself, I it showed none of my games as downloaded.

I am not really good with computers, and all I want to do is play some Civ 5, so could anyone help me?

It sounds like you perhaps tried to create a shortcut to Steam on the desktop and ended up actually moving Steam there instead.

You should move steam.exe back to the right place (which will be something like C:\Program Files\Steam)
Oh my god, thank you so much, it fixed everything :D

Now I just need to figure out how to make a shortcut properly

(Assuming Windows 7, but it's similar in most versions of Windows)

Easiest way to make a shortcut on the desktop would be go to the Steam folder, right-click on steam.exe, Send To, then select Desktop (create shortcut).

You can also right-click on the "Steam" folder in the Start Menu, and select Open. You can then copy the shortcut in the start menu to the desktop.
