Dark Souls Windows 8
Hi Guys, OK what a horrible experience to get GFWL to work. So I hope I can help someone that is struggling to get Dark Souls (1) to work.
1) You need to download the GFWL client (http://www.xbox.com/en-ZA/Live/PC/DownloadClient)
2) You need to set the compatibility level on the installer (I used Windows XP SP2).
3) Run as administrator and install
4) Dark Souls itself (darksouls.exe) I have on Windows 7 compatibility, it does not run if not set.

Do not try to run the GFWL client on it's own, it will tell you to install the Sign-in assistant, but that does not install at all. Run Dark Souls, and then GWFL will pop up and ask you to sign in. After that, it asks for an update, which is the sign in assistant, but this seems to work fine.

So currently I can sign in, DS saves the games and life is good. Oh and for God's sake install DSFix, just extract to same directory as darksouls.exe, and edit the dsfix.ini and change borderlessFullscreen 0 to borderlessFullscreen 1 or any other changes you want.

But GWFL is being discontinued in July (2014), and the devs are looking for alternatives. Can't say I am surprized. Just hope they find something decent.

I've found this method to work:

Messaggio originale di me:
First, uninstall the two Microsoft Games for Windows Live entries in the control panel. Then, right-click the installer you downloaded and click "Properties". Go to the "Compatibility" tab and set it to run as Windows 7. Then, click apply and OK. Right-click the installer again, and select "Run as Administrator". It will take a little longer, but it should start up, asking you to download an update. Download and run the installer it gives you (should be Microsoft sign-in assistant or something). It will look like it did nothing. Then run the GFWL client again, and sign in. This should fix the crash at startup!
This is very kind of you to do. I've seen a lot of people very frustrated with that game and with GFWL service in general. I'd like to say no one will miss it when it's gone, but unfortunately that is not true simply due to the fact that it will be taking many cool games with it, much like Gamespy.

I noticed Dark Souls has been on sale, which disgusts me. I still won't be buying it until they commit to ripping out the GFWL code or deactivating it. It's nothing more than a scam to sell a game you know will only work for another 5 weeks or so.
I think they will probably come with a patch to either disable the online saving, or change to a different service. I think DS2 saves somewhere (I might be wrong, but when starting it says connecting to game servers). DS is not that old, so canning it now would be stupid.
I hope they do something to fix it. I'm a longtime fan of the King's Field series, which are spiritual predecessors to Dark Souls so I've always had an interest in it that was entirely squashed by the fact that they put GFWL in it in the first place. I will never purchase a game with such a thing in it.
I will check out King's Fields, but I am pretty new to Dark Souls. But so far it intrigues me totally. That is why I bought 1 and 2. I like the fact that you actually need to put some thought into what you are doing, otherwise the rest of the game will go wrong for you.
The King's Field series in not available on PC, but rather on console (PSX and PS2). They're amazing games, all three of them (four for the Japanese versions). They still rank among my favourite console games.

Damn, I do not think I will be buying a console again soon, my previous 2 got stolen. So I bought a high end PC (not too keen on building), together with home insurance!, simply because I wanted to play Outlast. But who knows, a XBox1 or PS4 game might come out that make me do the same!
Oh, an old PS2 and PSX console is a cheap buy, not sure about the games though. They were never ported to PC, sadly. These are the OLD Playstation consoles I'm talking about, not the new generation ones.

Yeah, I think old console games are hard to get old of. But, without ofense, old games are more about nostalgia. I bought Descent 3 a while back, but cannot get into it.
im very new to this and I am still have problems. how do i install under windows 7 compatiblilty?
