Steam Client Bootstrapper Has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close

Right, let me get this out of the way by saying i wanted to go onto steam to play some Terraria, but i got that message (above) and i have re installed steam, no luck... downloaded the new Java, still no progress... im completely stuck on what to do, cause when i tried some of the community's attempts, my games all of a sudden just went poof, there was no steamapps folder or anything... I'd hate to sound like a whiny little so and so here but it really is bugging me, since i also cant really chat to my friends (i know i can via web but id rather be playing a game too...) If anyone can give me a hand, i'd be very grateful.

(EDIT by Valve: We have fixed this crash, which affects mostly older AMD CPUs. You need to download and run SteamSetup.exe from http://store.steampowered.com/about/ to receive the fix. Same here, there's a lot of people with the same problem after the last update. I've sent a message to Steam support and I'm waiting for the response, but it's obvious that they have to fix something with this last update.

It seems like it has nothing todo with Win-XP
more with the SSE2 requirement since the last Update.

Exactly, the same here.

Tyan Thunder Dual K7 here. (Athlon MP aka XP)
Looks like VALVE requires SSE2 since the last update.
Very unfortunate because many games don't need SSE2 to run but effectively killed my Retro Gaming box.

No workaround as Steam automatically updates to the latest version,
Hope this will be sorted or at least be given an option to run a Legacy Steam version that does not require SS2.

Otherwise everything lower then K8/P4 will not be able to run Steam, P3 and K7 Athlon and lower.

BUT IT IS NOT OFFICIAL CONFIRMED ATM
