Steam Client Bootstrapper Crash

Since May 21 2014 last update, Steam.exe can not start. just crash.
Deleted all steam folders and download new installed. The same problem.

This is Windows XP SP3 with AMD Athlon XP 2500+

I have other PC with Intel CPU is just fine.
So I believe Steam company programmer failed to check old AMD CPU

Exactly same problem happen again with today's steam.exe update. V2.37.82.33
AMD Athlon CPU got this problem again.
Steam programmers forgot NOT to include SSE2 CPU instruction set.

I think I found workaround

My current Steam folder has 2 DLL files of the crash error
- crashhandler.dll (= Version 2.37.82.33 = 297,664 bytes) <=== This is problem!
- crashhandler.dll.old (= Version 2.35.92.75 = 308,416 bytes August 13 2014)
- Steam.exe (=Version 02.37.82.33 August 28 2014)
- Steam.exe.old (=Version 02.35.92.75 August 13 2014)

1. delete crashhandler.dll (= Version 2.37.82.33)
2. rename crashhandler.dll.old to crashhandler.dll (= Version 2.35.92.75)
3. create steam.cfg with 1 line text "BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable" without quotation in Steam folder
4. Now, test steam.exe starting.

Still I want Valve to fix the crashhandler.dll instruction as soon as possible.
If Valve fixes, then just delete steam.cfg file which is preventing update.

Note: You do NOT need to use old Steam.exe which is dated August 13 2014.

Bump! Having the issue now. Same Error pops up. I Start Steam.exe, it opens up Connecting to my acc. It goes away....then nothing....nothing at all. I tried Uninstall/Reinstall. I tried to just redownload and hope for an error Fix. Nothing is working, none of this stuff on this Thread. Anyone? I have WinXP SP3. Didnt have any problem till about 3-4days ago. need my CS 1.6. please help.

It sounds like the freakshow software developers have finally got it through their thick skulls not to build for only the latest processors, but to be sure to generate code that will work on all processors, even ones that are used only by a tiny minority of people. There is no meaningful speed or performance difference it will make for something like a Steam client. You'd think these code monkeys would know that, but apparently they don't.

Hi all, i too am getting this error. I haven't used steam in a while, but got a new game for Christmas that requires it. I installed steam as part of the installation process but as soon as I put in my login details in it crashes with the bootstrapper error. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, and a few of the fixes mentioned throughout this discussion. I even tried clean booting windows and installing to see if that helped. I installed steam on my laptop and it works perfectly. So not sure what the issue is. Would have thought if I downloaded from the steam website I would get the most up to date version with this problem fixed?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Mhh Sorry to say but your problem sounds for me a little bit different.

The old Bootstrapper Error we are talking about in the past an in this thread has todo with NON SSE2 Support to very old CPUs like AMD Athlon, Sempron and or Pentium 3 and lower.

If you got these Error you dont even can see a login page or something.
At that second you press the Steam Icon on the desktop the error appears.
Thats the old Bootstrapper Error from this thread here.

Your Error, sounds a little bit different to me, and maybe all the advices here in this old thread doesnt help you at all with your error.

Okay, I got it sorted. I updated my graphics card driver (which I had only done about two weeks ago so I didn't figure it would be the problem) and it was the new version of Catalyst control. Everything started working after that.

1) Close / exit from your STEAM client (not logout - close program).
2) Download old client archive.
3) Unpack / copy files from folder STEAM_client_backup_2014-12-05
with replacing
to your STEAM folder ( usually C:\Program Files\Steam\ )
3.a) as variant - not overwrite the files in the folder \bin\, i.e. leave there a new version of the files.

4) "steam.cfg" is already included in the archive, you no need create it.
No need delete it. Otherwise, the client will update again, and again will get an error.
5) Try to start Steam.

2) Скачать по указанной ниже ссылке архив - предыдущую версию клиента.
3) Распаковать / скопировать файлы из папки STEAM_client_backup_2014-12-05
с заменой
в папку клиента STEAM ( обычно это папка C:\Program Files\Steam\ )
3.a) вариант - не перезаписывать файлы в папке \bin\, т.е. оставить там свежие файлы.

4) "steam.cfg" уже включён в архив - нет надобности его создавать.
Удалять тоже не надо. Иначе клиент опять обновится, и опять будет ошибка.
5) Пробуем запускать Steam.

Для тех кто ничего не понял и кто хочет по-русски:
Качаем Архив. Разместил на двух зеркалах, ссылки скопировать в новую вкладку.
Далее качаем по ссылке архив.
Потом распаковываем его в папку со steam
Если вы все сделали правильно, выскочит окно с вопросом хотите вы заменить (переписать) файлы? Соглашаемся
Создаем текстовым редактором файл steam.cfg
Прописываем там строчку: BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable

Это мой архив (см. выше пост 476. только кто-то себе перезалил), так что steam.cfg там уже есть. На этот счёт можно уже не беспокоиться.

Когда STEAM исправят эту проблему, нужно будет или удалить steam.cfg,
или закомментировать там строчку BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable символом #,
т.е. #BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable
