Generating key for Calypso games
How do I get the key to generate for a game that never offered and doesn't offer a key since it's the steam edition of a game that didn't have a launcher or key required when first purchased.

What exactly are you trying to do?

Without more info all i can say is if there never was a key you cant get a key.

Sadece Steam hesabına giriş yap ve ilave anahtar üretmeye veya girmeye gerek kalmadan oyunu erişebilir ve oynayabilirsin.

You can't.

It's always the publisher that generates keys, never users.

Why would Steam even want let users generate keys for games? Makes no sense...

No Steam games bought on this platform have keys - they are licences that are purchased on your account. Keys are generated and given to retailers for users who wish to purchase outside of the Steam Store. You cannot generate a key for a game you bought on Steam.

the reason is simple.
The game originally didn't require a key, now it has a launcher that wasn't originally included. It requires me to input the key for the product which was bought on steam as a steam edition and didn't need one. Now it does. Unlike products that had keys and I could look up before, this one doesn't show any and so I can't use my product since they edited it to let them act like stalkers.

Of course, the publisher might have screwed up somewhere. People on the forum of that game might have figured out a bit more already.

they use a trick where you remove the host txt from your computer, but that just makes your system vulnerable even if it works. Hoping steam had an answer since calypso didn't

We are not Steam, we are just users. Regardless, Steam is not going to fix their screwup; that's for them to do.

I'd bit mildly interested how removing a hosts.txt would fix something like that -- but, it does not make anything more vulnerable. Hosts.txt is an old file that is consulted to resolve hostnames before asking the DNS, so it's main use is to add local hostnames that the DNS doesn't know about. Nowadays, the DNS is usually done by a cheap router box that knows local hosts.

It might actually break a lot of things, though -- not entirely sure how much of that is still needed, but the one host that's always found in the file is "localhost"...

Try the game forum or contact the publishers direct. Typically with 3rd party launchers, the external platform either detects the licence from the Steam library or links the two seamlessly where no further code is ever needed.

Calypso is doing extremely shady stuff with that launcher, making you create a third-party account, which doesn't even work for most people; and even those who managed to get the "key" activated, claim it was revoked/stopped working after a while; something like a one-time license shenanigans. All that for a game that people have bought years before it was infected with that cancer.

Just use the hosts workaround (not deleting - very simple editing, see Tropico forums), it works for now.

Ok, that sounds more likely from a technical perspective -- hosts.txt "overrides" the DNS, so you can use it to direct a name lookup to an address that doesn't work... which I guess is what they are doing there.

Yes I would agree with Kargor.

I'm not sure you really understand the topic if you think using the hosts file makes your system "more vulnerable". First, vulnerable to what? Second, using the host file isn't some voodoo. As long as you don't have a safe domain or ip address to redirect to something malicious, nothing bad/dangerous is going to happen.

Although I understand some things like the host file, or the registry seem like scary places to laymen. They're really not that scary when you take the mysticism out of it.

Yes yes. You're right. I must not understand what the risks are and under some mystic understanding that removing a simpe txt does nothing.

That's incorrect. Certain older games do provide keys as they are required for certain aspects of the game e.g. Crysis.

If Kalypso are requesting a key they need to make sure that key is available or patch their system so it's not necessary.
