Second you should probably have found how to turn off the telemetry already(or simply don't put personal or mission critical info on it).
Third I have heard some reputable computer experts say that defender is enough, if you're also careful about what you click and turn off certain questionable features.
Finally if you feel you need to buy an "official" premium antivirus make sure it has some form of autoprotect and a way that you can do a real full 'slow scan' that checks everything. Windows is a complex beast and nasty things can be hiding anywhere.
Addendum, if you have a backup of all your files and you have the install disks and codes for everything then do yourself a favor and do a complete disk wipe clean-install. Then the only problems you have come from Windows itself until you put the rest of your programs on.
Anyway, this will be a good learning experience for you.
As for paid antiviruses, I have Norton360Premier and Iolo System Machanic Pro(there's Ultra but I don't need that at the moment). Your definition of good varies, but if it keeps the bad guys out thats ideal. Norton specifically used to slow systems down but thats not an issue anymore.
There's also Avast, Panda, Kapersky(If you're into the Russian stuff), plus there's all of those unknown antiviruses that are viruses when you see them on a google search. You'll figure out the legit ones from the scams pretty quickly(I hope).
But as reboot point out over many years what is best has change over the many years.
this is not about make a politivc issue over it, its fact that nation seem to get caught in miss usee other IT company, and i should not even have to suggest or make a point that this is the problem atm.
Ask any technician and support, if they follow security on a global scale in they can tell you exalty what i just did.
And we are only gamers here. so watchout for miss user of legit security app, that has a country that dont play nice anymore.
pay attention here, i did not mention a name / country. ( you fill in the missing spots. )
Defender is about the best, out of the way, AV solution out there. If you feel you need more bells and whistles that a fully featured AV can provide, just do a Google search for reviews and determine what's best for you.
Bear in mind that a lot of the AV solutions will require more attention than you are used to as they are typically over protective. From slowness or sluggish performance, to false positives, to blocking or brer websites you use on a daily basis.
But if you pay attention as you should be doing already, then Defender is all you need.
but have to agree with post 2 regarding browsing/downloading habits
