Installing Steam - Error - Close Steam Before Continuing
This error will happen if you named your 'SteamInstaller.exe' as 'Steam.exe' when choosing to save it instead to auto run.

To fix it, just rename the installer to 'SteamInstaller.exe' or anything besides 'Steam' and try to install it again.

As long there is any process with the exe name OR window name as 'Steam.exe', the installing proccess will be halted.

I hope this save someone some time :)

mine is named steam setup but still isgiving me this message

the same problem with me. steam broke the other day after i upgraded to windows 10 (it ran fine.... for about a day) and couldnt even open anymore, and wasnt even showing up in my task manager. i uninstalled steam to try and fix this but the setup is giving me this error (like sinaah above me, its names steam setup, not steam or steaminstaller).
this error makes no sense because steam isnt even installed on my system anymore, let alone able to run and prevent setup

Can you try rename it to SteamInstaller.exe? Or just delete your installer and download a new one, without renaming it?

i just did as you suggested (both), and no, neither worked. still the same error :(

Hummm... So, can you see if there is any process named Steam? Maybe on the Details tab of the Task Manager.

Maybe there is a new Windows Process or something else called Steam. We never know.
bunny Aug 4, 2015 @ 11:26am
i have checked before but stopped at the first couple tabs-- double checking shows that "steam.exe" is running under the details tab, and it has a steam icon. this is very mysterious as i uninstalled it and then restarted my computer to make sure it wasnt running somehow.
but what is more mysterious-- and my now-clear issue is if i try to end the process it claims that i dont have permission to end it. i will double check its not in any accessible startup options, restart my computer, and get back to you. if you have any suggestions feels free to tell me

So, there is definitely your problem. Finding a way to stop it will fix the issue. Maybe something haven't been uninstalled correctly. Try using some app like CCleaner to uninstall it and fix any regedit errors that may exist. And, try to deactave UAC for a second and be sure you are logged in as an Administrator before trying to stop it. Other than that, I can't help you, I am sorry :(

Most of the time, people will install Steam only when they don't have steam already installed.

i totally forgot about this forum. my problem is fixed but only because windows 10 is so broken in colapsed in on itself essentially and i had to do a system restore. honestly i can offer no better advice. back up everything and then just say "♥♥♥♥ you windows 10"

I have fixed that by deleting each steam file in safe mode. I had this problem yesterday so my answer is probably a bit late :p
