Steam overlay not appearing in-game
I've recently had a weird issue where my steam overlay will not come up while I'm in-game. I checked my settings; I have "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game" checked and my shortcut key is the default Shift+Tab, but it doesn't work in-game. Any time I get an invite to a game or a steam messagr from a friend I have to minimize my game to check it. Has anyone else had a similar issue or would anyone else have possible suggestions on how to fix this issue? Thanks a head of time!

  • Ensure it's enabled.
  • Does this happen with one game; or all the games?
  • Ensure there's nothing interfering with Steam's overlay.
  • Disable the custom skin if you've currently got it enabled.
  • Validate the client files.
      1. Navigate yourself to
        C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\
      2. Try to remove everything except
        • Steam.exe
        • SteamApps -folder
        • userdata -folder
        • ssfn(numbersequence)

      3. Re-launch Steam

Will this require me to redownload all of my games? My internet speed is very low and reinstalling all my games isn't really an option. Thanks!

in step 2 it says to remove everything /except/ 4 things. The second thing on that list is the "steamapps" folder. That is where all your games are stored, so no.. you won't be deleting those and thus you will not have to download them all over again.

@fauxtronic I don't really have many games installed, but I've only been playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and this is where the issue is occuring. I know the overlay worked before, just randomly I tried to shift+tab while in the middle of a match and it wouldn't open and hasn't since.

even if you looked at the list Teutep posted, think of maybe new programs you have installed recently that are similar to any listed on that support page.

Example, maybe it does not list your specific firewall program but you *do* run a firewall that is unlisted. Or maybe your Anti-virus program is not specifically listed, but you still run one..

Something like that could be interferring.

i know my firewall (which isn't on the list) interfers with Steam Overlay being able to work for games.

@Hanomaly I've looked at the list and I do have 1 program on that list, but I've been using it for years and it's never caused and issue. I haven't updated it or downloaded any new programs since this issue started occuring. I was playing CS:GO and it was working and I launched later the same day and it wouldn't work. Nothing new was downloaded or updated even.

Just incase, can you try selective startup?

    1. Hold down the Windows and the R -buttons
    2. Type in msconfig
      • Click the Selective Startup -option.
        • Untick Load Startup Items

    3. Select the Services -tab; tick this:
      X
      Hide All Microsoft Services

      Press
        Disable All

    4. Apply & Close
    5. Restart PC

Also try launching another game and see if the problem persists.

I've done some testing in other games now; the issue is only in Counter-Strike:Global Offensive, which is really the only game I play much of.

Fixed the issue. I right clicked Counter-Strike:Global Offensive in my library and clicked properties. I had to click Enable Steam overlay on that specific game.
