How do I put custom textures in my map?

I used Sourcecraft to convert a section of my Minecraft world to a .VMF file. I made the bsp, put it on my server, and invited a friend. It looked how it should to me (I think sourcecraft put the textures into my Materials folder for the client-side), but my friend saw all of the Minecraft textures as black and purple.

How do I make the textures automatically download for other people?

A help and tips forum on Steam, for Steam related problems probably isn't the easiest place to find an answer to your question. Off topic might get you something but I'd rather suggest either the Minecraft forums or the subreddit etc.

This isn't really about Minecraft. I believe this also applies to my other worlds that aren't Minecraft related, for example I once made a world which used a trollface texture and it showed up black and purple.

In that case might I suggest also posting to other Steam game specific forums where this is relevant since it is a game feature related query. So you'd go to other discussion forums that use similar textures using Sourcecraft such as Garry's Mod for example. Usually game specific topics are often overlooked on the general forums or take longer to be answered.
