My voice chat volume isn't working

I really need help. My mic is working perfectly but I can't hear my friends, I use my built in mic. With and without heaphones I can't hear them, can someone tell me what to do?

Go into Control Panel
Hardware and Sound
Manage Audio Devices
Click on Speakers or Headphones to highlight it
Then click on the Configure button and ensure you set it up for Stereo sound, not 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.

Most people need to do this on a fresh install of Windows 7 or later.

Also, set 'Speakers' or 'Headphones' as default, using the Set Default button, and it's little drop down list for both Default Device, and Default Communications Device (for Headphones Mic, depending on your set-up).

Also make sure Steam related windows are not Muted under your notification Speaker > Mixer.
As that would mute any sounds from Steam Client windows.
