"Your Steam credentials have expired"
This is annoying as it pops up every five to ten minutes (yes, I timed it).

Is there a fix and if so, how do I do it?
If there's no fix, then I'm dead inside.

If you are sure the pop-ups realy are from Steam you can re-verify your credentials via (right top corner) [Your nick] -> (dropdown menu) Account Details. If not, remove the infection.

Remove the infection? I'm running a stock system (I reinstall my OS regularly).

I've tried it already, as well as running Steam as an administrator and it still persists.

Have you changed your password recently? That seems to be the most common cause (Steam has the old password saved so when it goes to check if it's the right password it's not hence causing the session to time out, you enter it in there but there is no Save Password checkbox so it doesn't replace the saved password causing it to timeout again on the next check).

From what I can see these steps:
1. Go to "RUN" type regedt32
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software
3. Now Delete the Folder named "Valve".
4. Run steam.
5. Steam will now update and games will run.

Fix the issue. I imagine because it removes the hash of the saved password forcing you to put in a new one when you restart Steam.

May I have a source to the information you provided? Nothing against you, I'd only like to play it on the safe side.

I just googled for "steam refresh login problem", this is from a topic on the old Steam forums.

  • The pop-up does look like a genuine Steam window but i can't say i've seen it any time at my own screen.
  • Very wise to ask for the source Karrot. I know from myself i am not familiar enough with editting Registry Keys to do such just becouse one gamer at an outdated forum said so. Specially since the only gamer commenting in the post didn't suffer the issue so could not verify the fix actually works.
