Pinning Steam games to taskbar?

I cant seem to pin Steam games to my taskbar. I pinned my most used programs and games to my taskbar so I could hide the desktop icons and only have the background wallpaper showing. I can do this for Origin games but why not Steam games? Btw im running Windows 10 Pro 64bit.

In Steam>Library, right click the name of the game you want and create shortcut. Cut the shortcut from the desktop and paste it to the folder (steam>steamapps>common>gamefolder). right click empty space in that folder, New>Shortcut. Leave this "Create Shortcut" wizard open and right click > Properties on the game shortcut you pasted in this folder. In the Create shortcut wizard, enter: "%windir%\explorer.exe steam://rungameid/573490" (NO QUOTES, mind the space between the .exe and steam://...). The steam://rungameid/###### you want to get by copying from the shortcut steam made and you cut/pasted to this folder. Next > Name it, confirm. This new Shortcut you made, Right Click>Properties>Change Icon>Browse. Navigate to your games folder, again, in this new window and click the game/launcher .exe to use that Icon for your new shortcut. Icons are optional. You have just made a shortcut that you can pin to taskbar and/or start and will preserve the clcik>open steam>open game w/steam overlay/achievs functionality. Just R-Clicking and pinning the .exe to taskbar/start and running may cause overlay and/or achieves to not work. The above convoluted shrotcut preserves the functionality like launching from steam or it's .url based shortcut(unpinnable for many).

edit: there may be a steam_appid.txt file in your game folder you can get the gameid ###### from, it is an is an optional source for the right id to enter for the rungameid/######.

edit2: to explicitly add/pin games to the Steam Jumplist(Click&Hold and Drag Up on the Steam Taskbar shortcut) just drag the shortcut steam adds to the desktop to the taskbar and allow it to "Pin to the Steam Client Bootstrapper" (aka add it to the Steam Taskbar Icon Jumplist). Uncertain if this is a universal feature.

Okay. To make this easy for everyone: if you want to pin a game to the STEAM ICON on your taskbar (Like HotDogMolly's video shows):

If you have a shortcut to the game on your desktop, just drag that shortcut to the steam icon on your taskbar, it will ask if you want to pin it. Boom Done. You can delete the shortcut from your desktop.

If you DO NOT have a shortcut to the game on your desktop, goto your library in steam, right click the game, choose (ADD SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP), then do the steps above :)

Trouble is that does not work after every other update, MS borked their pinning system it only likes exe shortcuts(no bats no coms and no urls) and steam is getting to the point more games can only be ran from the URL links or from steam itself which cannot be pinned in win10 which just forces me to crack every other thing if I want quick access to games or mod tools like the creation kit which for Skyrim is locked to steam for some stupid reason.

I swear MS and Value are the laziest developers ever, both force unintuitive BS crap thinking it will save them time and effort…it doesn’t it just pushes people away…

Mindless drooling rants aside I figured out a sure fire way to get it to work even with a few seconded start up lag…..

Make a shortcut of the steam exe cut and paste it to the game folder make a desktop.txt file and add this

[LocalizedFileNames]
pinned.lnk=@,-4161

Between the @ and , add the steam location

Mine looks like this

pinned.lnk=@F:\Games\Steam\Steam.exe,-4161


Now that shortcut you made to steam go into steam make the games desktop shortcut and get the run IDwhich will look like this (this one is for TF2)
steam://rungameid/440


then go back to the steam shortcut and right click ,click properties and change target properties to
F:\Games\Steam\Steam.exe steam://rungameid/440
(reminder your steam.exe location will be different)

This will allow you to stick the damn thing into taskbar(only works with exe files tho), you can also make a folder anywhere and name it 4 or 5 characters G or S or steam toss the url links steam makes into it and add that folder as a toolbar to the taskbar, if you add more folders into it and it will dropdown menu them as well so you can organize your collection handy for modding, adding a shortcut to the folder will open that folder rather than view it via the dropdown menu.

the only way I've been able to get it to work since pin to start (windows app) no longer works is to install the game right click on it on steam and browse local files find its .EXE and from there right clicking it will give you the option for either pinning to start or pinning to task bar. I hope this helps someone

Some games DRM will not work that way and the exe can not load properly. The ini trick seems to work every time when using steams shortcut URLs. The new link system needs an ini to help load the shortcuts in the task bar. Another way to bypass it is putting a folder on taskbar and tossing shortcuts in it.

@hotdogmolly it wasnt working for a while but if your running windows 10 go to the windows store (yeah it sucks) and download pin steam. give it your user name and it does the rest. I had issues with it for a few months until recently. I guess something broke and its not updated very often.

At least in Win7 you can pin games to the steam icon.

The Steam shortcuts are technically URLs so they wont let you pin those

It gives you the option to pin the game to the steam icon

I found that way to be the easiest, just repllce the number ID for the game with the one you want, then change the icon by finding the games exe and slecting it.

Oddly enough these days with the newer win10 updates you can toss the url link steam shortcut of games into a single taskbar icon on the taskbard and when you right click it you can choose from the games you droped into the taskbar.
