I have the Steam-randomly-closing-games-without-warning bug. Is there a definitive answer?
As this is really common, and only applies to some games running through Steam, there's no point troubleshooting my individual setup as I've witnessed helpers try with others afflicted with this.

The Metro games were doing it occasionally, Bioshock2 and Minerva's Den did it occassionally, with Minerva's Den being worse, and now I've just begun playing Dishonoured and it, too, did it. :-(

I know the latter are Unreal Engine games, but the first was 4A's own engine, as far as I'm aware.

At one point I suspected it may have something to do with my ATi cards installing audio drivers which may conflict with my actual soundcard, but this time those drivers are already disabled in Device Manager.

So I'm knocking this back into Steam's ballpark.

I guess it could be related to a Steam dependency on a MS library, where one of the two parties is not communicating correctly.

TIA for any help.

Win7 Ultimate x64 [still waiting for my Win10 notification to greenlight]

Edit: Well, waddya know, Win10 just now became available - finally!

You're in the middle of playing a game and it just instantly disappears without warning or error, leaving you staring at the Steam interface on your desktop.
ROFL. Common 'bug' my arse.

Check your hardware for defects and scan for malware.

And you, Sir Moron of Moron Towers, FECK RIGHT OFF!!!

Any adults in the house? TIA.
You're making up bugs to suit your ego.

There is no such Steam CTD bug.
It certainly isn't "common" as you claim.

Look for realistic sources of the Crash To Desktop, like an over or under volted CPU or bad Power Supply Unit.

How do you know it's Steam that's closing the games?

I'm not familiar with "Malware", but I've heard it's related to stuff like ActiveX, scripts and online recommendations to download "codecs" and "anti-virus" software, isn't it?

He doesn't, he is just blaming Steam because it launches many of the games.

He has a hardware problem, but he just doesn't want to diagnose it correctly.
Malware = Any malicious software, including ***but not limited to***, viruses, rootkits, keyloggers, key generators, game cheats, etc.

I don't need to.
I know they're good.
It's related to Steam.
STAY ON TOPIC, AS OUTLINED.

hahahaha
Did my facetiousness really go over your head?
I'm reporting you. You need to get out of this thread. You're only here as a troll.
Topic is: Games Crash To Desktop.

Cause is: Hardware defects or overclocking or under volting or bad PSU.

Cause is not: Steam 'crashing' the games.

Open your eyes and you might learn something new kid.

He doesn't understand that a crash to desktop with no warning or error message is ALWAYS* caused by defective hardware and he is refusing to troubleshoot his hardware and drivers.

He has convinced himself this is common (it isn't, under 1% of Steam users suffer CTD's) and is incorrectly labelling it a 'Steam bug'.

* With one exception being allocating too much User Mode memory.

Because this has been commonly reported by many others and no-one is looking into Steam, just blaming everyone's computers.
Now, I know there are a lot of spoiled juveniles out there who can build rigs but are too inexperienced to run them without error [the amount of power that is available now can mask a un-optimised somewhat broken system]
It's not necessarily Steam alone, but could be an OS interdependency.

OS interdependency issues cause error dialogs or runtime failures.

Then you would be getting an error message or runtime failure and guess what?

You're getting CTD with NO error or runtime failure dialog box.

Culprit: Defective hardware.

And no, this isn't a common Steam bug as you have convinced yourself and no, 99% of other Steam users are not getting unexplained CTD's.

Just relax, think calmly and logically.
