Preloading never works for me
Like the title says, I have an awful personal experience with preloading a game before it comes out. When the game releases, the unpacking takes forever, and even when it finishes, I always have problems running the game after. It ends up saving more time and effort overall to just delete and download the game fresh, since I don't have a SSD, and my internet is way faster than my HDD. Is there anyway to make Steam automatically download a game once it releases, but NOT preload it?

No.

This is a farfetch, but you could make the Task Scheduler open up a .url -file that runs the address
steam://install/<app-ID>

That is, if you know when around the game is released.

Of course, even then you'll get the installation prompt which you've to manually go through.

Website side doesn't have that though, so that could be one way.

Thanks for the reply! I'll look into such a solution. Too bad this feature isn't built into Steam >.< oh well.

I got it!

You can find out your session ID if you hit CTRL+U on your web-browser while logged into Steam. APP-ID is visible in the game's Store Page URL. Exclude the ()

Keep your cookies, stay logged in on your web-browser, and make that as a .url file to your Task Scheduler.

Should you want it installed on another disk, pre-emptively do this via administator cmd.exe:

mklink /d "PRECISE FOLDER PATH" "TO FOLDER PATH"
i.e.
mklink /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\futuregametitlefolder" "D:\Games\futuregametitlewhereIwantit"

@Teutep Wow! Thank you so much! I'll try this.
Tev 2015 年 9 月 22 日 上午 6:52
I'll recommend testing with a small file at first so you'll know it's set up right for the pre-ordered title. :)
Spider 2015 年 9 月 22 日 上午 7:01
Gotcha. Thanks again :)
Tev 2015 年 9 月 22 日 上午 7:18
I tested now with Fallout 4 for the heck of it.

Pre-order titles say this
{"success":2}

So if you'll get this code on your browser, the address is right. (and should work should you have both your login on your web-browser and the Steam -client on simultaneously)

When released, executing the URL will say {"success":1} and then initiate the download on the Steam -client. This will automatically download the game on the disk Steam is installed in, thus I mentioned symlink as an alternative above. :)

It's easier to do a remote install if you are logged in on the website or use the mobile app.
Tev 2015 年 9 月 22 日 上午 8:36
Yeah, thus I commented after for the remote install URL :)

You can start the remote install from your library on your profile instead of doing (and remembering ) the URL.

Yeah well, good luck automating that.

Thus the direct link.

It's a better option if you don't want to automate it.
Tev 2015 年 9 月 22 日 上午 8:48
Yeah, but the point of this thread was the automation.

Otherwise I'd have suggested that from the very first post.

Infact, the better option is to just install it directly using the Steam -client. But again, realtime interaction required there.
