Excessive vulgarity and profanity.
There should be a system, for all games that run through steam, that would allow players an easy way to report on individuals that use profanity and vulgarity in their chat and names. Should be able to work in voice chat as well. I tire of hearing small children, and immature adolescents cursing online because they think that somehow makes them cool. Often, I have to stop playing because of language that is being used that has no place in the gaming world.

I fully understand that some games use it to enhance the game play (atmosphere). That I can handle. What I don't care for are the wannabes' that like to sit behind a keyboard and think it's funny to curse out everyone in chat, or have vulgar screen names.

These players should be banned for a length of time, then banned permanently should they commit the same offense in a different game available through steam.

I'm going to give you a run down because you're obviously new you how the internet works. (No offense inteded, of course.)

First, this is the internet, people will do as they wish, if you report them, that's fine if they offended you, but realize this will get extrodinariliy tiresome (obviously not saying you shouldn't hold your own values in REAL life.) but this is the internet, it's basically anonymous until someone does something stupid\illegal. If you want to be here, you need thick skin, nowhere is different. No, this isn't "OKAY." You should play a game to have FUN. Everyone should, that's the point.

And I understand some games are competitive or require teamwork, I won't say you're bad at X game because I never played with you. You could be terrible at, for instance, KF2. Personally I would help you to improve, but most would say "lol ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ noob go ♥♥♥♥ yourself" and this is how video games here work mostly.

If Valve itself put everyone to work to ban every "toxic" player, well nothing would get done. Moderators can do what they can in the forums but that is where a majority of their power is limited, so don't start blaming Moderators for it,

For the majority people who own the servers are to blame for keeping toxic players out.

I mean no offense to you at all, I just wanted to throw my opinion on this here. If someone is TRULY HARASSING YOU (wont leave you alone no matter what you do.) PLEASE REPORT THEM. Steam is meant to make friends and have fun on, don't let it be a place of stress.

You know there is such thing as a mute button.
I fully understand how the internet allows a person to remain anonymous, but I still feel that something can be done here. This is not a totally anonymous enviornment. Each person here is registered through Steam, and must log in, in order to access their games. At the very minimum, if a person has a profane handle, we should be able to report that. And Valve should also try to discourage that practice. But by doing nothing, and just saying we can't, they only encourage it further. If a company like Blizzard can do it through their games, I don't see why Valve can't either.

I fully understand that Steam is also operating as a portal to purchase games by other companies, but I fail to see the difficulty in setting up such a system. Because as I've already said, you have to sign into Steam in order to be able to access the games you've purchased, so you are not anonymous to Valve at all.

I am also not so naive to think that this can be completely stopped. But, I do feel that it can be curbed, to a certain extent. I feel that not doing anything is the easy way out. There is always a starting point to anything.

As far as the comment from Lycairin about just hitting the mute button. That would work if I could only mute individuals, and not the entire game.
This is why I prefer single-player games.
Dude, grow a thicker skin. No one cam actually hurt you on the internet, they can only trash talk. And this is only a problem if you listen. Don't listen.
Growing a thick skin is a must on the internet.

Doesn't mean that the excessive vulgarity is pleasant though.
I can assure you guy's that my skin is indeed thick. Otherwise, I would have given up gaming years ago. It just bothers me that when I have family over (small kids), and I let them have access to my games. Games that are ok for kids to play, except for the vulgairty from other players. Or even when my own kids play. Although that's not so much of a problem anymore, they are young adults now.

That's the thing: Online games are a public place and other players might not want to raise your kids. You wouldn't let your kids alone in an adult bar and then complain to everyone that they say things inapropriate for children.

First off, whoever said anything about me wanting other players to raise my kids? Also, kids are not allowed into an adult bar anyway, so what's your point there? Most games are made for kids and adults alike. Those that I believe are too mature, my kids do not get to play. If I'm at a play ground, and I hear some children cursing, I politely inform them that that sort of language is inappropriate. It sounds to me as if you don't have kids, and if you do, you're not trying to raise them with good values and morals.
My point is that your kids hearing kid-unfitting things in an online game is sorta natural.
So I am considering two distinct possibilities here:

1. OP is a troll playing on the whole freedom of speech is evil angle. And this is perfectly fine. Spices up the forums a bit.

2. OP actually lives in a place where the social and political norms result in a coerced interpretation of conservative morality, and actually wholly believes that cussing shouldn't be covered by freedom of expression. This isn't fine, because that would mean that the OP lives in a place that's not so good to live in.

I'm leaning toward #1, because I really doubt that he (unlikely to be a she because of this very reason) would otherwise have access to the cesspool of western, hedonistic decadence that is the Steam gaming platform.

It seems to me that you're holding somewhat of a double standard here. Why are you not trying to ban offensive speech from the playgrounds as well? Or, for that matter, why are you not informing the other players in games that what they're saying is inappropriate?

You'll need to address these little bits in order for this whole...thing to work.

Or the OP doesn't realize that the internet is a public place and public places are bad for kids to be without adult supervision.
It's just the way the cookie crumbles when you mix children with online video games. If you're unhappy with a community surrounding a specific game, you might want to check out some single player games! If it's Steam in general (such as texting), pick your friends wisely and you won't run into any issues.

Because of the anonymity of being online, people will often say things they feel that they can get away with, even though they would never say the same things directly to another person in public. Therefore, as I'm sure you already know, asking politely for someone to refrain from using profanity will usually result in a cussing storm from that very same person. Asking a person in real life, however, and doing so politely, will usually result in a favorable action. So there is no double standard, I just don't go for the bait.
Let me guess? Your ether new to the internet or your from Twitter.

Here’s the kick, this is the internet people say and do whatever they want with little to no consequences.
