[FIX] How to salvage your download if it restarted after you closed Steam.
So perhaps you accidentally turned off your computer, or there was a power outage, or you always turn your computer off when you go to sleep. In any case, you know that when you closed Steam last time, you had already downloaded 20gb out of the 24gb, but now that you started it again, it's back to 3gb and you are probably freaking out.

Maybe your internet is slow and it will take you forever to download all of that again, or maybe you are close to your monthly bandwidth cap and you don't want it all to go to waste. Well, I have good news for you!

Just follow these easy steps and you'll be restarting your download from the right place:

(Note: I'll be using Fallout 4 as an example, but this method works for any other game as long as you use the correct folder names and corresponding app id numbers for whichever game download you are trying to fix.)
  • Pause your download and exit Steam.
  • Go to your Steam common directory, typically C:\Program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common and create a new folder named Fallout 4.
  • Go to your Steam downloading directory, C:\Program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading and open the folder with the related app number. In our case, for Fallout 4 that would be 377160
  • Move the contents of this folder to the one you just created.
  • From the downloading folder, delete any files with a .patch extension that include the app number 377160. i.e. state_377160_228990.patch (Note that there will probably be multiple files with this app number. Delete all of them.)
  • From your steamapps folder, delete appmanifest_377160.acf
  • Start Steam and try to install the game again

Before the download begins again, it should automatically make a check for existing files and only download the missing ones. You will probably miss a couple hundred megabytes worth of your download, but you will not have to start from scratch.

Thanks for the help! Maybe it will be pinned for users to find it easier. *Wink*
Just want to confirm that this method worked like a charm. Saved me +7hrs of redownloading.

Please pin.

After spending 60.00 dollars on a game I shouldn't have to do trouble shoot it.
Shame on you.

Unfortunately, troubleshooting comes with pc gaming. You're free to refund your game if you don't want to troubleshoot it, bro.
