Bought the recent humble bundle which contained a 4 pack of contagion

I didn't know how to gift steam codes through humble bundle without just sending the codes through a chat message, so I tried activating 2 of the 4 codes onto my account assuming I would get an extra copy. Unfortunately that didn't happen and I got a notifcation saying I already owned the game so I'm wondering if the extra code is still valid? If not can I get steam to retract the key so I can give the code to a friend through a message or something. Thanks in advance.
