Also you know there is no such thing as "checking if is a legit code" right? Either it's real and you got it and they can never get it back or not. Sounds like you both did bad stuff.
Maybe they didn't know it was used because they got it from someone else? And now they thought you got the money.
If they got the key from somewhere else they can't know if it is used or not without potentially using it themselves, maybe they where just as clumsy as you.
I'm gonna plays devils advocate here.
Yes, Steam will see that you have not activated the card on your account but how can you prove that you have not sold the code to a friend or kept it and not activated it yet?
It is completely possible that someone could do that and get trade banned because they cannot prove otherwise.
